|
|
Hi
Bought a 1982 CB125T2 for my other half to ride
It was in a bit of a sorry state.... The usual (was rough running, smoky and would foul right hand plug on an annoyingly regular basis)
I tried to do the repair on a budget. Started off with stem seals, but skipped rings and rebore as the parts were reading on the upper side of worn, but not disasterous....and i'm out of work.
Refitted the engine and still smoked from right hand cylinder only. Popped my bore scope into the cylinder and it looked "ok".....
Anyhoo.... Decided that i'd go the whole hog in the end.
Bought a cylinder kit from AW motorcycles for £80 and fitted it
Sort of...
The drillings for the crankcase to cylinder locating dowels were off.
Take one out and it fitted.... put it back in and it wouldn't sit down flush. It wasn't the depth of the holes, it was the actual position!
In the end I went for one dowel. Not correct I know, but I marked the cylinder in relation to the crankcase in the "sweetspot" position wise and figured that 11 studs/bolts would keep her in place. Time will tell I guess.
Everything else was fine.... apart from the lack of recesses for the seals that fit around the dowels that the engine oil make their way up. There was only two enlarged holes instead of 3 as per the original parts. I must admit I was pretty sure that the top end would leak given that I was not going to be fitting any form of sealing apart from the gasket
The cylinder to head gasket was tin which worried me even more than the lack of seals. I was sure this was going to end in tears, but carried on regardless.
Well.... the old girl is back together and she is sweet as a nut. I've rechecked head nuts/bolts, reset tappets, adjusted cam chain tension, set points, new plugs and balanced carbs and to say i'm pleased is an understatement.
The engine is really good. Very quiet, starts first prod most times, idles smoothly, sounds good!
and...... NO LEAKS OR SMOKE! Hurrah!
So, for £80 i'm a happy bunny. This is a practice bike which my beloved will use for a while until she decides which "big" bike she wants to buy, so i'm not expecting to go round the world on Chinese parts, but if they do a few thousand miles without issue then i'll be a happy camper.
I'd still like to get to the bottom of why most CB125T's seem to suffer with right hand smoking far more than left hand... All I can see is that there appear to be 2 oilways up the right hand side of the engine and only one up the left. Can anyone enlighten me?
Teflon Mike.. I tried to message you, but the forum kept telling me my message was suspected spam.
Hope this helps someone in the future.
