I'm really sorry if this is a repost but the search function hasn't helped me find anything.

So from what I can make out this is a chap who has been riding inappropriately for the conditions so has crashed and really hurt himself. However because he didn't injure any cyclists, nuns or kittens while crashing he is a 'hero' and is getting an excessive amount of media coverage and general good will from the public, none of which seem to criticise or even really mention his riding on the day of the collision.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-42246312

I recall the Pistonheads thread by the chap, who skidded on a corner in his car and ended up on the wrong side of the road seriously injuring an oncoming biker, as he recounted his time in prison and the effects it has had on his life.

So is the difference between a 'hero' and a 'criminal' just down to pure luck on the road?

Also everyone 'lays it down' just to 'save' whichever kittens were in the way.

Because the metal on the frame obviously slows them down quicker with better control than the rubber tyres connected to a steering and braking system - obviously some big conspiracy that we don't just run on blocks of metal!

Add in the injuries and the fact he isn't a member of BCF, doesn't worship nobcat or want ste for mod?

Of course he's a hero, mumsnet would agree. Thumbs Up (and Adam, although if he had been wearing rainpal.....)

I was never a saxophone/clarinet fan. I don't like Jazz either. Perhaps it's part of a conspiracy to rid the world of wind instrument players....

'Hero': one of the most missused words in the English language.

A pilot whose light aircraft conks out because he's scrimped on maintenance, and manages to bring it down in a field, is a 'hero' for avoiding a nearby housing estate (notwithstanding the self-evidently much better personal outcome).

A old man who does something to get himself noticed in the papers (usually dying) is a war 'hero' simply because he was unfortunate to get conscripted during 1939-1945, along with most of the rest of his generation.

Meh.

PS: I've never heard of Candy Dulfur but I am now officially a fan Shocked

I thought thread title was a stereotypical far Eastern new member's first post greeting to his two wheeled brethren.

Don't know if you left that there to point out that this pilot was actually indeed qualified for the 'hero' epithet? Even him - barely, because he evidently knew he was 100% fucked whatever the outcome; he just took the logical decision to fly his deaded plane into the ground rather than a housing estate. Still, good lad though.

Now, if he'd consciously foregone the use of an ejector seat or parachute in order to prevent the plane nosediving into a built-up area... that would have indeed been worthy of 'hero' status.

Along these lines - https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/hero-mum-who-died-saving-8741571

Woman kill's herself through incompetence, but avoids a full-Darwin is a 'hero'.

Indeed, and that's the thing with both of these stories, the narrative is all fucked up.

If the mother had time to be a 'hero' and save her child, then she had time to move both of them away from the lorry and avoid any contact at all. In reality she's just pushed her kid into the side of a moving lorry and fallen over and been crushed while the pushchair has been tangled up and the child thrown free to safety.

And if the biker had enough time, control and skill to manoeuvre the bike into the ditch to avoid the cyclists then he had enough time and control to stay on the correct side of the road and avoid the cyclists and save himself from injury. In reality he ran out of talent lost rear wheel traction and was a total passenger as he smashed off the road and through the trees narrowly missing the cyclists.

I bet the stories would be different if the ethnicity of either person were different and I know the story would be different if the biker was unemployed or had any criminal history.

What does race have to do with it? They can create a narrative for any story: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=4520897#4520897
