|
|
Hi,
I have a non-EU bike a Honda ACE 125 that I would like to put UK (registration) plates on - by successfully completing the MSVA (The DVLA testing the bike to make it safe for UK road). I have read the MSVA Inspection Manual and think /hope I can make the necessary changes to the bike for it to pass. However, I have some questions that I am hoping people might be able to answer:
FYI – the bike is a Category B (motorcycles with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 125cc and a maximum power output not exceeding 11kW)
Section 17 (Radio Interference) states that a bike will fail if “the HT ignition system is not fitted with radio interference suppression equipment”. What is radio interference suppression equipment and how do I know if my bike is fitted with it?
Section 8 (External Projections) states that “the rear edge of any filler cap located on the upper surface of the fuel tank should not protrude more than 15mm about the surface”. AKA, the fuel cap cannot stick up above the tank more than 15mm. My cap does. Is there any way I can make the cap sit lower in the tank/other solution ideas?
Section 6 (Lighting & Signalling). My indicators can only be used one at a time when the bike is on. However, to pass the MSVA, both need to be able to work at the same time (or flash alternatively) when the bike is off. Any ideas how I can do this?
And, to increase the brightness of my headlight, can I just put in a more powerful bulb? Or is brightness dependant on battery power? And, if I change the battery, would this allow me to use the lights when the bike is off (or is that down to wiring within the bike)?
Also, does anyone know if normal (i.e. production) bikes have to have the registration plate lit up and also have fog or parking lights (that can work when the power if off)?
Finally on lighting, what are non-triangular type rear and side retro-reflectors?
Section 23 (Engine Power Restriction Information Plate) refers to all bikes (manufactured after 2003) having “details of the restrictions displayed on a plate (at least 60mm x 40mm) attached to the vehicle by the manufacturer and marked with the manufactures name, the category of vehicle and number of teeth on the drive and driven sprockets)". I can’t seem to find this on my bike. Does this have to be one plate or can the information be shown throughout the bike? Does Honda do this? If so, where is it located?
Section 15 (Brakes) states the bike needs a parking brake. Can sticking the bike in first gear count as a parking brake?
Finally, section 15 (tyres) goes into detail on tyre markings (specifically that the tyre is moulded to permanently display “E”, “JIS” [Japan] or DOT [USA]). My tyres don’t have any of these markings, they were made in China. Am I right to assume they don’t have a hope in hells chance of passing?
Appreciate there is a lot of questions here. Any help would be great.
Thanks |

Either a resistor in the plug cap (most already have one) or an NGK sparkplug with R in the part number.

I think it means both at the same time on either side of the bike. So both left ones need to work at the same time or alternately or both right ones.

Depends on your charging system but if it's a small honda where the lights only work with the engine running then it has AC lighting and the answer is no to all three questions. I don't think brightness is part of the SVA test though, just position and beam pattern.

Reg plate yes, needs a white light. Can be as simple as a small hole or clear part in the taillight lens if it's located above the plate. Otherwise a single, white LED will do the trick.
No to fogs. No to parking lights.

Reflectors. A red one at the back (often part of the taillight lens). An orange one each side. Not triangular in shape. You can use pushbike ones or you get sticky backed ones (but not retroreflective tape). ACE125 has them as standard.

I'm pretty sure this is just for trikes.

They'll need an E mark. Frankly, you also WANT them to be. Ungraded Chinese tyres. Nope! Change them. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

i did it my my us import triumph tiger 1050 "naked"
was actually a breeze,
the fact they make a uk model of the same bike pretty much means it'll pass.
ignore the radio emmision stuff, they dont test it.
the biggest thing is pointy bits, mirror size, exhaust noise,
everything else its just like a regular mot ____________________ the humans are dead
