I say PMR446 as I used Amateur 144MHZ and 433Mhz gear for this but years ago (we all had Ham licences)
Boats have big windows so should be fine fro Short ranges

Yes they will. I have a pair and when my mate and I are in convoy we use them rather than phones.

Bit overkill for on one boat mind even with a 70 footer.

I can hear my wife from one end of my boat to the other even without a hearing aid or a megaphone Rolling Eyes

It does rather. Laughing

The person who isn't steering needs to move towards the back of the boat if they want to have a conversation without shouting. Razz

Handy when doing locks though.

It really isn't that useful. Locks are not so big you can't talk to someone from the boat to the side. We are talking the Grand Union canal here, not the Panama.

May be of some use if you've got someone lockwheeling, but that's about the only time I can think of (and even then you don't NEED communication back to the steerer!)

We used Motorola radios on our drill ships, semilsubmersibles and jack-up drill rigs. Sometime in the bowels there was a bit of signal loss but they were normally useable.
As said, probably redundant if you can speak to the other person by quietly shouting. 🤣
Radio conversation where only one side can talk at anytime if fraught with problems too. 😊
I think one has to use call signs rather than names and you cannot swear so normal conversation is impossible for Scottish folk. Sad

When the wife is useless at locks or steering the boat and there is just the 2 of you its handy for abusing her.

Good point, you can abuse her when she is ashore and you are in the middle of the canal without fear of physical retaliation. Thumbs Up

She'll get you later mind, they all do.
