Coinbase lets you sell at market value to your bank account.

well boys..I'm at $4.15 today.....would have been more but due to some some wall street investor reading some article on BCF bad mouthing crypto the price crashed from todays high of $327 to $297 this morning I was 9% down!! Shocked Shocked Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad however due to valid argument on said forum it returned to $3.11 by end of play today. Banana prices remained suppressed from the early high values in july and petrol and diesel prices have risen by 26% before tax in the same time frame....tune in again monday when I expect to have passed the £5 mark and buy a raspberry pi zero with the proceeds Laughing Laughing Or I might just keep it in the pot and see if I can retire by 75 Wink

Hows that Banana investment doing RB?

Sweet. I got in at 17c after reading a couple of interesting articles about them although with this one, I definitely riding the hype rather than long term holding. This is just with pocket money rather than proper investment, sorry Roger/Percy, speculation.

So If I were to want to drop £100 quid into this on payday just to have a play with it, where would I start? Ive read the entire thread but wouldnt mind the up to date version, seems like things change a lot in this.

If I were to start at £100 I would buy ETH at coinbase and then send it to an exchange like Binance, where the fees are low and then check out what coins I think are worth backing right now.

For me personally I think that VeChain are a good propostion, as they have been around a long time and have an interesting product in that they are linked to asset tracking on the blockchain. This is something that I personally believe will be used in the future, so it's something I am backing.
I'm not saying you should of course, I'm just pointing out that after researching a bit, this is something that I personally believe in, so that's where my money goes. You should do some research before you decide.

The reason I recommend ETH over BTC to buy from coinbase, is that sending ETH is a lot cheaper than sending BTC, so the transfer of funds to an exchange would be minimal. You could however just transfer to GDAX, which is a coinbase linked exchange, so there are no fees, but GDAX is not so great at listing alt coins.

I cracked $9 today....mostly monero but started ETH. Itll be interesting to see how the 300 odd 1 month bonds on bit coin do when the time is up. If the price stays good I see a surge in real money investors pushing values up which leads to more and more of the same ....a bit like property prices a few years back when it was just assumed you couldnt go wrong paying over the odds for a property as it would be worth more in no time. Then roll on the media of the bust bubble headlines. I'm already getting peeved at every media article saying the price was Bullish today Laughing Laughing

Cheers, I think im looking at more long term rather than trying to win on short term trades. Ive grabbed £100 worth of ETH, is Binance a wallet thing? Im interested in moving it out of coinbase into something 'secure' quickly as per Artists comments earlier in the thread.

Cheers

Binance is just another exchange like coinbase.

If you just want to hold long term, make a paper wallet and make some copies and store them in separate locations.

There are lot of other wallet options but for £100, it isn't worth getting a hardware wallet for now.

There are software based and web based wallets also but they have risks attached to them although if you are careful, you should be OK. There are lots of guides online on how to set up each type of wallet.

Binance is an Exchange where you can trade your ETH for alt coins. Coinbase is insured against hacking, so unless you know how to securely hold your ETH in your own wallet, then it's almost certainly safer there, as you might get hacked and lose your wallet.
I have lots of money in Coinbase, it's about the safest place, it's never been hacked and even if it was, they are covered, so dont worry.
If you have no intention of trading then just leave it as ETH, if you want to trade it, send it to Binance.

It will be interesting if they do get hacked. Supposedly only their hot wallet is insured and even then, I wouldn't bet on them getting a 100% payout.

Not a fan of storing coins anywhere that I don't control the keys but for small amounts its ok so long as you are willing to risk it.

https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/1662379-how-is-coinbase-insured-

Quote:
All digital currency that Coinbase holds online is fully insured. This means that if Coinbase were to suffer a breach of its online storage, the insurance policy would pay out to cover any customer funds lost as a result. Digital currency is not legal tender, is not backed by the government, and digital currency accounts and value balances on Coinbase are not subject to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or Securities Investor Protection Corporation protections.

The insurance policy covers any losses resulting from a breach of Coinbase’s physical security, cyber security, or by employee theft.

Coinbase holds less than 2% of customer funds online. The rest is held in offline storage.

This insurance policy does not cover any losses resulting from the compromise of your individual Coinbase account. It is your responsibility to use a strong password and maintain control of all login credentials you use to access Coinbase and GDAX.

Seems like perfectly fine cover to me.

Seems like.

If they did get hacked and lost a hundred million $, I am sure the insurer would do anything to get out of paying. E.g. proving negligence of some sort.
Either way, you are trusting what the exchange says in terms of insurance.
If you have anything significant, get a hardware wallet.
