Is there a way to retrieve the code for the stereo in my GFs ford without having to pay for it?

Yeah I have a generator somewhere, I will seek it out.
In the meantime do you have the model of the car and the stereo serial number.

You should be able to get the stereo to display the serial number, although maybe not if it's locked. Had to unlock the (Ford) radios at work fairly regularly as they liked changing batteries without worrying about the radio. Also if she has paperwork for the car it might be on (a little card) in there.

I use this one.

https://www.pumapeople.com/decode.php

Not just for PUMA, suits any Ford as long as the serial number starts with 'M'.

Keep it written down in the car if she has a weak battery. One of the vans at work needed it entered virtually everytime you switched the thing on Confused
