So my portable external 1tb HDD gave up the ghost today and I only have 1 external HDD left and I think I need to sort out my storage.

Not looking to spend a load of money, but can anyone recommend a good way for me to keep everything backed up?

I currently have 2 Macbook Pros (250gb and 500gb versions) and have 1tb dropbox package (I know I can't store 1tb, fuck you dropbox) and I use CarbonCopy cloner to manage the backups, daily from my DB folder to Local folder, then both USB externals (now one) are mirrored.

I use a QNAP 412 with 4x 4tb drives for my photography backup.

if its just backup and you can wait a few hours if you need to recover it, consider amazon s3 or glacier.

AWS docs wrote:

Amazon Glacier is an extremely low-cost storage service that provides secure and durable storage for data archiving and backup. It is optimized for data that is infrequently accessed and for which retrieval times of several hours are suitable.

it should only cost a few dollars a month to store a couple of terrabytes in glacier, getting data out of glacier takes a few hours, have a read of the docs and have a play with https://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html to work out what it will cost you.

I bought one of these recently, being USB 3.0 it's super fast at about 50MB/sec

+1 for nas

A simple way in would be an old pc. As long as it's got a few drive bays & usb, the specs don't need to be high.

As an added bonus, you can use it for torrents without your mac being on and access the files from all of your devices.

I think NAS might be the way forward, sometimes I work away from the office and being able to access files remotely would be pretty handy, plus I can ditch dropbox (possibly).

Is it worth buying a rack second hand and buying new HDDs worth it, or just biting the bullet for something which I can plug and play?

Any brands that are better than others? I don't fancy paying £300+ at the moment after xmas and needed to spend some money on the bikes when the weather gets a little better.

I can't answer your question as I have no experience with racks Wink . My first server (which did me proud) was just a very basic desktop pc that I got from ebay for £30. (similar to something like this - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FAST-DELL-OPTIPLEX-SPEC-CUSTOMISE-YOUR-OWN-DESKTOP-PC-COMPUTER-WINDOWS/322149291658?hash=item4b0198168a:m:m7gA0hrLUo9s2q3uTd8VumQ)

Better answer is the HP Gen 8 microserver. They seems to be a prefered choice amongst the forum (myself included). They also come up quite cheap and sometimes with cash back deals. There's a thread to have a read though - https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=298192

Synology........

£150 for the 2 bay unit....

you really do get a lot of bang for your buck.
the best OS of all the home NAS units.
stink load of app's available.

If you were to get one then you can use it as a file share and then plug your working USB drive into the NAS and use the built in backup software to backup the NAS.

if it helps I'm sure i can rustle up a couple of 1TB drives to go in the unit to help you along.

I also have one of these, really worth the money..

Something else you can look at, you get a 4TB external self powered for about £100

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-PlayStation/dp/B017KE8OG0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515534635&sr=8-1&keywords=4tb+hard+drive+external

It would be wise and cheaper to buy a 4 or 5 TB, if you compare then to the 2 TB versions.

This. You can do so much with the Synology units.

Thanks for all the input folks, I have gone with the Synology unit as it seems to be pretty flexible. Extra thanks to Colin for being a top bloke!
