Any love / hate for this, particularly the current model?

I would search but apparently that functionality is sat in the corner with nobcat.jpg

I was surprised how relatively low / comfortable it was and how low down the weight was.

Neighbour has one, I find it somewhat uninspiring and the build quality is not excellent it rusts all too easily even with preventative maintenance.

I think that's a winter / salt issue. I'm not going to use whatever I buy like that so .....

I'm pretty tempted - it's all I'd need plus a lot more. if you add the 2017 electronics update, it's a lot of bike.

That the Z1000 is probably 3x the power of my current bike .... i think a 200bhp H2 would be beyond overkill.

I can always sell this and buy a 'boring' adventure bike if my back / wrists / nerves can't take it but i have a strong feeling i want to own a rocket ship once to try it. It's reasonably upright so not full on sports bike, has decent lights, it can take a topbox and residuals seem decent.

It would have been the wrong bike to buy 3 years ago.

To be fair they all seem pretty reliable. Think I'm right in saying the engine can trace it's routes all the way back to the ZX9R.

They all seen to hold their value very well.

I like big Kwak rocket ships, they always seem to have something about them the other manufacturers don't quite encapsulate (except maybe the busa).

If I could afford the difference I would go for the ZZR but that's obviously just personal choice.

If you can get a pre reg or a very low mileage 2nd hand you shouldn't be too far out of pocket if you find you don't get on with it.

In fairness they are well reviewed, apparently very reliable and very well suited for the role they are used in. My neighbour got his only two months after passing his test and had never ridden anything other than a fucked old VFR750 for a brief period. I didn't find it to be a very exciting bike when compared to others in the same bracket. I found the VFR800 to have more character but that's a V4 so they are somewhat in a category of their own. Compared to the 1400, there just isn't a comparison. The 1400 handles better and has bags more 'personality'.

All said and done, if you're looking for a reasonably good bike for commuting and average riding then the Z1000SX is a very good choice. If you're looking for something that gives you a stiffy every time you take it out, it ain't that....it's very 'average'.
