Fzr400 knocking engine

Can anyone tell what mite be up with this 400 engine ? Sorry it's just sound but you can hear a slight knocking sound . It's continuous on neutral but it goes when you rev . Then when you let go of accelerator it seems louder

Does it sound like cam chain tensioner or is it only running on 3 cylinders ? Major problem ?

Start the engine, warm it properly up, then squirt some water onto the headers, one by one. The one that doesn't boil the water right away is the dead cylinder. Spitting onto the headers works as well, don't burn your face.

That is the simplest test. From that audio clip of yours I can't tell if it runs on 3 cylinders. There could be some leaks in the exhaust system making it sound like it.

I would say it runs on 3 cylinders, but I'm not 100% sure. I've heard engines sound like that before and they were perfectly fine.

Buy a new oil filter.
Whip the old one off.
Carefully cut the top off it. Carefully so you do not cut your self or get any cutting int eh filter.
Pull the guts out the filter.
Separate the pleats and spread the paper out.
Look for jewellery in the paper/cloth.

Jewellery is bright shiny expensive metal.

If you have metal particles in the filter the engine is gubbed and needs pulled apart.

It's a sure fire way to tell if you have bearing damage. Big ends, mains, small ends do not make a noise without shedding lots of metal. The filter pick it up.
