I've just bought a 2014 bike that's got Datatag stickers on it, presumably genuine. I assume the first owner is the registered keeper. I've got no documentation or information about it. Can I register it to me ?, is it worth a wank or realistically just bullshit that villains ignore ?. What does 'The Panel' think ?.

Worthless.

Roger has FOI'ed scotch plod or something like that to find out how many bikes or parts have been recovered thanks to datatag and they didn't have a clue.

Villains aren't going to care in the slightest about the datatag stickers since they won't make any difference to the value of the parts or the bike as a whole.

Any reason for presuming the stickers are genuine?

Well, my bike is Datatagged and has never been nicked, so there you go - 100% success rate. Cool

I wouldn't bother doing so again but I did transfer the datatag registration over to me when I bought the bike - cost a few quid. Easy enough to do - you fill in a form on their website; they will (apparently) contact their last known registered owner to check there's no objection. I'm sure Datatag would soon tell you if it's actually not registered with them at all...

I reckon any value the system might have is in deterrent (the theory is that any stolen parts of the bike could be 'finger-printed' and therefore traceable back to the owner), rather than recovery after a bike does get stolen, and for that reason I wouldn't bother re-registering.

I'm with STE on this... I also think it's worthless..

For making your insurance policy cheaper, yes. To deter thieves, no. I didn't bother re-registering.

I’ve swooped most of the panels on my 1100 to get rid of the datatag. Looks awful and means a full repaint to remove.

+1 for worthless to you. My Nazi Tractor is still registered to BMW as I found it didn't make a jot of difference to my quotes. It might just possibly help your insurer recover some of their payout months down the line, but it's not like they've going to pay you the withheld excess.

The stickers will have the same deterrence effect regardless of to whom it's registered. It's not like Paddy Pikey (or Pandit Plod) is going to care.

Here's a charming tale of Datatag proactively "ruining the day" of an honest purchaser.

Can you see any way of checking with Datatag before purchasing a bike?

the datatag kits are retro fitted (badly) at Pdi on triumphs and ducati's, doesn't stop them being stolen on sight, because it means nothing in Poland / Lithuania / Bulgaria etc

Cost £15.50 to change registration, it reduced my insurance by £12 for the first year, if it reduces second year premium by anything over £3.50 then it'll have been worth it.

Might be worth enquiring with your insurance company to see if they will give a discount?

As far as a deterrent, I'd go with the general consensus, in that if thieves are going to steal your bike, they'll steal it, datatag or not.

Datatag came free when I bought my bike and I eventually got around to putting one of the stickers on it. I suppose it may make it 0.0005% less likely to get nicked if there's a bike parked up next to it without one.

Realistically, it'll be nicked by some scrotes and set on fire when they've got bored ragging it around a field.

It's not something I'd spend money on tbh.

Annoying little black dots all over a shiny new bike? I should coco. So I cleaned it and guess what, most of them fell off.

Plus the D A T A T A G sticker looks cretinous on any bike.

Pointless insuroscam really. You just pay the part you "save" from the insurance to another company, taking more time and effort. Realistically, the insurance company are the only ones who could possibly benefit from this (and as above, most don't), so why aren't they providing it as part of a 'come to us, our policy will be cheaper if you spaff black dots all over your spanking new bike' deal?

Because it's a cartel and we're all mugs, that's why.

Just ran a quote on a CBR600RR without security firstly, and with Datatag.

Datatag price was £30 more expensive Laughing

Ask the seller for the registration details of the donor bike.
Was it broken for spares?
Is he/she a tea leaf?
Are you confident you won't get a tug some day form the Po Po.

They do spot checks at bike meets of and on.

Shocked
