Looking at replacing my cheaper cameras for something you might be able to identify someone from

My current setup is probably about 0.4mp Laughing

Looking at Hikvision, but been warned about loads of "grey imports" with no support/ firmware updates etc.

What do you all use?

Pretty much anything on the market will be a massive improvement over what you have then lol

Budget, how many cameras are required ?
Are you just looking to ID a person close to your property, or after a bit more ?

Even if the Grey imports dont update, if it works out of the box, why update, if the system offers the functionality when you buy it, why risk updating ?

Ive fit all sorts budget wise, commercial and domestic, the ££ does dictate the quality, but even the more expensive are plastic housings, and the cables are no different to the "cheap" ebay ones now,
A few years ago you could really tell the budget quality, but I cant slate it now.

Just to add, even if you have a 4 camera now, and think its fine, buy a 8 channel, for the difference in cost, its worth it and gives you options in the future.

cheers for that, it makes sense over f/w

what i have seen so far is

DS-7204HQHI-K1 for the DVR

&

DS-2CE56F1T-IT3 for the cameras

I'm only saying 4 channel as my house is literally like a shoe box, 3 cameras will easily cover the whole property.

We have a HikVision system at work, around 20 cameras.

It plays back and records nicely, been in situ for about 12 months.

Remote access blah blah.

Not arsed about grey imports or imports of any other colour, it just works fine.

Nothing else to say really.

Don't mess about with analogue cameras nowadays, get a PoE switch and IP cameras and an XVR. Even if the hardware is a few percent more expensive, you'll save on cabling costs and general simplicity of installation. For instance, you don't have to run all the cables back to the XVR, just to the switch which can be hidden out of the way somewhere, which also means the XVR can be somewhere convenient.

Couldn't quite tell from the models you quoted whether they were IP or not, looked as if they weren't.

They look ok, not the best, but Im guessing that 7 x better than your current is going to be a big improvement,
I would guess these would still utilise the current wiring anyway ?
So no worries there.

Hikvision have humourous security at best. Many schools use it but we exploit it and tell them why we won't expose to the web.

DIY, gearbest some 1080p cams, Nas and BlueIris. Job done for sub 200.

We use Hikvision cameras for our external CCTV and d-link for the ones monitoring the internal factory areas.

Both work well.

I've installed cheap (< £100) Hikvision dome cameras at my sister's house and they're really good quality for the money - better than my £300 Lilin camera.

I like the Synology NAS solution as it gives you a device that can be used for much more than just CCTV storage.

It comes with a CCTV package (Surveillance Station) that handles a very wide range of cameras and will email you snapshots of any detections if you want it to.

If you want more than 2 cameras you do need to buy extra licences though at about £40 each for a lifetime licence.

I use a generic brand chinese 1080p night camera and its better quality than our Axis cameras at work...

Buying the right camera can be very easy.

Its "buying the correct camera" bit that i'm struggling with.

I don't really want to shell out £300 pair camera

The ones I currently have are from a "kit" on eBay, that were supposedly HD (dont laugh at the back) but they are shite.

Hence why I was going to go with a brand

When looking at camera`s,
the higher the TVL the better quality the image,
the smaller the lens 2.8 mm the wider the viewing angle, but you loose some distance, the bigger the lens ie 6 mm the narrower the viewing angle, but it will bring things further a field closer, most are 3.6mm,

the bigger the TVL the more storage each file will take up on the HDD,
Buy a decent size HDD,

I use these - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/BESDER-HD-IP-Camera-1080P-960P-720P-Bullet-Cam-2MP-Lens-IR-IP-CCTV-Security-Camera/32835984507.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.56.73f35a27p0IXcD&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_4_10152_10151_10065_10344_10130_10068_10324_10547_10342_10343_10340_10341_10190_10084_10083_10615_10307_10301_10303_10313_10059_10314_10184_10534_100031_10604_10103_10142,searchweb201603_25,ppcSwitch_5&algo_expid=17b54ffa-6604-4335-9334-5902483656e9-7&algo_pvid=17b54ffa-6604-4335-9334-5902483656e9&priceBeautifyAB=3

As long as you have a decent bit of software, BlueIris for example, it'll be perfect.

To me that just isn't clear enough. Even my cheapo chinky ones give you crystal clear quality and are POE. I highly rate them.

(I've tried many of the chinese ones, the ones I linked at the best for that price.)
