CBF600 is playing up again.
i fitted a voltmeter to the handlebars so i can monitor after the last time it got a bit dodgy.

at 1500rpm i'm reading 13.5v across the battery.
at 3000rom it drops down to 12.5
at 4500rpm is at 12v or less.

it seems the very cold weather has dropped the whole lot by 1v.
on the way into work this morning down the motor way the voltage often dropped below 12v.

i have a spare rectifier (off the bay) and it made no difference.
i have a spare stator also off the ebay but have not fitted it as of yet.

i followed the charging check list and it wasn't obvious where the fault was. it was just all a bit weak.

i have bit of time next week so can spend the time to check it over.

anyone want to make a prediction on what to look at first ?

Cheers
C.

Stator is fucked, voltage is collapsing. Likely a coil (or coils) is shorting out. Whip it out and smell the crispy goodness.

Oh and do it before it fucks your rectumfrier, because it will.

13.5 volts says I'm wrong but there could be a voltage drop that far from the battery. True readings would be from the battery terminals. I did something similar with a red-amber-green battery status LED wired ahead of the R1's sidelight wiring and it showed amber when it should have been green.

Stator check
Stator test
three wires out usually yellow or white

any one to -ve (earth) more than 30M ohms
between any pair (three tests) between 0.3 and 2 ohms

Also check power (RED) and earth (GREEN) wires from rec reg to battery are low resistance Honda looms can fail !

Can also do a dynamic test on the stator. AC voltage between each pair of yellows coming off the stator with the engine running. See if there's an increasing output with rev speed that's roughly consistant between each pair.

Be aware it can be a high enough voltage to give you a dunt so don't hold onto the wires. I've seen >70VAC.
