Just a quick one... Bought wifey a new laptop, Windows based. She's not that great with these things, so need a good basic free antivirus etc. Back in the day I'd run avast and malwarebytes. Nothing got past these. Is it still the same or is there better out there now?

As usual, Karma for those that help.

I'd just use the inbuilt windows defender and have free malwarebytes installed.

I use Avast on all my devices, not sure what makes a good or bad antivirus in your opinion, but I've not had a virus yet and it doesn't seem too resource hoggy, which is good enough for me!

I agree on windows defender. Free and 365 cover.

I have Avast but have had Norton, Dr. Solomon, McAfee and another I cannot remember. All they do is take money for auld rope and launch updates then you never notice them doing much.
I have not had any machine shut down by a virus attack since 2004 from Libyan PC an Indian guy used. The viruses spread there from pirated software they all share. (Or so it was said.)

But it is good practice to have something rather than be naked out there.

Shocked

I have Mcafee because it comes free with my BT Infinity. It seems fine but I would never pay for it.

I used Avast for my free anti virus. Never had any problems.

Cheers folks. To be fair, it's not like she'll be going on any dodgy websites. More likely she'll be daft enough to open a dodgy email. I'll bung avast on there and leave her to it.

Hmm I didn't realise that, well I saw 'BT Virus Protect' but didn't realise it was McAfee. I got McAfee free with my last ISP and used it on my laptop as everything else (AVG/MSE) slowed it down.

AVG which I've used for years started throwing up too many ads/upgrade messages so I use Microsoft Security Essentials (being a Win' 7 w&nker).
