Whilst I can't knock anyone for wanting to to better themselves by giving something up, it has always bemused me why people need the New Year or lent to begin the change in lifestyle.
If you want to better yourself, make the change as soon as you make the decision, not at some date in the future.

When I first got together with Miss haroman, I noticed that she lathered her meals in a huge amount of salt. So I questioned her on it, asking if she realised what a ridiculous amount of salt she was using and what it can do. A swift educational conversation later she asks "So what do suggest I do?" I told her to throw her bottle of salt in the bin. Just remove it from your life so you can't have it. And she did, and she's been salt free ever since, with no issue.

As Polarbear quite rightly pointed out, Gracie has the painters in. I could type a 3000 word post on all the specifics of
the grossness, but I won't. She's been bleeding for 10 days now. It's not helping that I can't give her her normal amount
of exercise in case she ends up being a #wooftoo after an unwanted advance from a male doggo, so I've found a nice
enclosed field and we play fetch till she drops instead of her usual roaming the woods exploring which is her usual walk.
Problem with that is she has a habit of sodding off which is fine normally but not when she's this engorged, her fanny looks
like a cock at the moment, Sick It's jutting out like the tailgate on a 6 series BMW.

Yeah I bet all serial killers use that coverup. Shifty

This does make me glad my dogs were always spayed or neutered though. Very Happy

Just last week I finished dry January. (I started late as I was off in to the new year and well blahh). It's something I've done a few times.

(Doesn't help in that I've probably got about 90 bottles of wine worth in the house).

I found it werid, sort of hard, sort of not. I ended up going to sleep at say 10, waking at 8 every workday and longer at weekends. Whereas i'd normal have a few glasses of red on a night.

Now i'm back on the source and it's lent.

I was brought up religeous, church school and all that and very religious parents. I'm not that religious , but I do attend the odd church parade (kids are all in scouts) and easter and christmas etc.

I once gave up salt for lent and gosh did I get used to it, I used to coat my food in the stuff, now I feel physicaly sick at the thought of using it.

This year though, i've given up sweets/choclate/sweet stuff/biscuits etc. Though i've mad an exception for flapjacks for when i'm cycling.

I can provide pics.

We are letting her have her first season because shes a large breed and that is what the vet has advised we do.
I'm glad it will be her last. She's started to smell a bit fruity now, especially after a good old lick. I'm sure
male dogs love that smell but I'm not partial personally...It's pretty grim, and smells a lot like the pheremone plug in
thingy we got for her when she was little to get her through the night without distress. It's supposed to smell of mother
dog or something, it did work though at the time.

Fuk....

I was looking at a new one about a week ago in Tesco.

Not sure if I should get Samsung or Sharp?

I'm prepared to go sub £200 for something kind-of fancy too.

I believe the subject requires its own thread really.

It's only 800w. Once you go more powerful you can't go back. Everything cooks quicker.

On the same site the Samsung looks good at 1000W

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/household-appliances/cooking/microwaves/samsung-ms28j5215as-solo-microwave-silver-10127469-pdt.html

The Kenwoo 900W looks good too.

I can certainly keep my intake sub 500 calories a day and lose a chunk in 2 or 3 weeks. Sure, it might not be considered healthy by some, but it works for me personally.

Arrow I get immensely hangry. Tried the 600 calorie fast day twice a week thing, and it worked but I was grumpy as heck.

Arrow I weigh 10 stone with a BMI of 23.1

Arrow I'm nearly 38 years old.

Despite this, I'm usually OK at losing a bit of weight.

If I tried that, the rage would lead to mass murder and probably cannibalism.

I've stopped drinking for the first time daily since 2012.....not true, cut down massively over 2017.

Anyway, day 17. Harder than expected.

Not for lent though. Might make it to lent Laughing

^^^Big Massive respect in your area Mr. Thumbs Up I've lost a couple of mates due to booze abuse. 1 because he literally drank himself dead and another because I could only stand by and watch the implosion for so long. My closest friend is battling but he's managing to keep his business going and keep sober during the day so a high functioning boozer.

I'm 5 weeks into being a non-smoker after 35 years of industrial style inhalations...a tad up n down but quite enjoying the clarity and the non-wheezing which was the main reason.

I didn't choose new year Lent or #NationalNoSmoking I just knew it was time to do something. I may have a blast in the future I may not.

If it wasn't for the lack of lung I'd still be smoking. Also old enough to have lost family members and friends/colleagues who never smoked or drank booze...Just fed up of spending the morning spitting and disguising my persistent coughs from Mrs HT.

Booze is a proper tricky one ..Birthday..Booze..End of working week Booze Birth..Deaths Marriage..Booze..New Job Booze...Lost Job Booze...so that's why I think you deserve a big special HT reacharound.

You keep doing what you gotta do Pidge and lay of the Heroin and Crack. Thumbs Up Smile

I can happily eat little if I am inactive, but I "bonk" if I'm running or cycling, I have to pile the food in throughout the day.

Lately I've been eating too much junk though, need to cut down.

Can and will, but not cos of lent, though I did have a shed load of pancakes on shrove tuesday.

Well done on giving up Thumbs Up

I gave up smoking 20 years ago after being on 40-60 Marlboro reds a day. I just decided that day I'd stop and did. I had tried before many times without success so I think 99.9% is your frame of mind. I still could never have another fag as I'm sure I'd just start again.

Booze is difficult, much more. Its insidious how it gets hold of you and the only person who doesn't see it is you. I stopped drinking in the house because I was drinking alone when the missus had gone to bed and would think nothing of knocking back a bottle of plonk. Embarassed

I still drink when out. I don't think I have the willpower or actually want to give up completely as I like it but fair play to anyone who succeeds.

Cheers HT, don't want to give the impression that I'm massively struggling with it, or bushed my teeth with a bottle of voddy every day.

Probably 4 cans of larger a night for 3 nights, a bottle of wine for 3 nights. On average.

Enough to get fat, slow and moobs. And, I think, an altered brain.

The last few days if I think about beer, I salivate. God I'd love a beer.

Fortunately, my one super power is lazyness. I could be a crack addict, but if its not in my home, meh, can't be arsed to go out looking for it.

I'm 5 weeks into being a non-smoker after 35 years of industrial style inhalations...a tad up n down but quite enjoying the clarity and the non-wheezing which was the main reason.

Congrats boss, very cool! Did you find initially it was actually harder to breathe for a couple of weeks?
That's something the quit adds don't tell you. Give up smoking and instantly get Asthma.

I quit in 2004 after 8 years of 20 B&H / day because of fecked lungs all the time. The smoking ban in 2007 would have ruined it anyway, props to those who carried on.

In 2000 I was having a fag outside an office and this old fella comes past and says "I gave that up 10 years ago......and there's not a day goes by that I wouldn't kill for a cigarette"

To be fair, 6 years after I gave up, if you'd passed me in the street smoking a Benson, I'd have tailed you home (again) inhaling your cast-offs. But by about year 8, I'd flipped. Couldn't stand the smell.

There you go HT, a rousing motivational snippet...

^^^So you didn't wake up with soiled clothing and police incident number in your pocket....Amateur. Smile

I was not kidding about being an industrial level smoker. Done more than my share. I can inhale a smoldering bonfire. Just shy of 100 grams of baccy a week..no filters so in answer to your question I'm breathing better than I have in years.

I knew the toxins would leave within a few weeks or so..Patches and vaping isn't for me.

I'm not getting the mental urge to buy it. No mither if I end up having an occasional, similar to Polarbear and his occasional drink when he's out socialising.

I will no doubt have a social smoke at shindigs but something inside has clicked that I won't be buying anymore, and for me that's the key.

I don't see smoking/drinking/drugging/computering/eating/sexing as bad until it hinders you.

Could do without the up n down feelings but that could just be how I operate. Laughing

Keep on keeping on Pidge....you're a goodun. Thumbs Up

Had no plans to give anything up from any particular date, but I believe I have just quit regular use of painkillers, after 27 years of taking them every. single. day.

Stick at it. Although I still smoke weed, I smoke it straight from the grinder, no tobacco. I quit that after about 27 years of
recreational spliff and habitual cigarette smoking. The last 15 of those years I smoked roll ups as I stopped buying
tailor mades when they hit £5 a packet. Laughing But I'm 5 years completely 100% tobacco free, no relapses for exactly 5
years on the coming 13th March. But I won't lie, quitting the way I did was a big shock to my system and it was a good
year before I genuinely felf any noticable benefit from dropping the fags. More recently I've felt the benefit when I'm out
yomping around with the dog, it's mixed terrain and she's a combo of 2 different working breeds so she takes some keeping
up with. It's worth it in the end. I also appreciated being a non smoker by the time I travelled to NZ and Canada as those
flights would have had me on edge with nicotine withdrawl had I still been a smoker.
