FTFY.

Just the cliff notes then: when will private blickchains make Bitcoin usable as a day to day currency for buying a pint of bread?

In May 2010 someone bought two Papa Johns pizzas for the bargain price of 10,000 bitcoins.

Down 18% since a key holder lost his job at J&S and had to dump his holding to pay his bills.

And still not even scratching the surface of what is being laundered with Fiat Cash.

Should be ban that?

Seriously though, these reports really do make me wince. Good luck trying to convert the Bitcoin from these accounts into cash. Bitcoin is not anonymous. They come up with this mule bullshit, but even then it's hard as hell to do anything illegal with exchanges and banks.
Bitcoins leave a trail, cash doesn't. If I was a law enforcer, I'd prefer to chase trails.

Old news.

They were using RPi's last year.

Though the fact they've been compromising the gov is amusing. Very Happy

An interesting take on decentralised crypto, although it will definitely be legal tender...

Ah, yeah, it's doing that to me now as well. I think you can only access it a certain number of times a day before you get paywalled...

Anyhow, TL;DR, Venezuela has decided their 'normal' currency is so fucked that they may as well jump on the crypto bandwagon. Launched the 'Petro', a cryptocoin endorsed by the local government (hence legal tender, at least in Venezuela) and backed by their oil reserves.

Cryptofanbois will point at it as the start of widestream adoption, cynical old me thinks it's a novel way of selling oil futures whilst also circumventing US sanctions.

Either way, exciting times.

Not quite.
Government backed cryptos are doomed to failure as they go against the decentralised ethos that gives crypto its draw.

Widespread adoption of crypto has already happened in Venezuela, the government are trying to salvage what they can with an ill-informed jump into the crypto space.

That doesn't necessarily follow, particularly as the point of el Petro is to scam foreign capitalist imperialists, not the struggling proletariat.

Legal tender means that it can be used to discharge a debt to a court. Day to day transactions between individuals or even the gubment are neither here nor there. Arizona will let you pay your taxes in BTC, but not your speeding fines. (And I do mean fines).

No, Criminals barely bother with Bitcoin anymore due to the traceability.
The previous ransomware wallet has been abandoned after some withdrawals were openly tracked.

Criminals are steering towards Monero, as it's not traceable.
When I say criminals, I mean people buying from silk road type stores.

The overwhelming amount of criminals in the world are still dealing only in cash. Linking crypto to crime is an outdated view and one that shows a complete misunderstanding of what crypto is and does.

I don't understand why these differ from Bolivars but anyway, there's nothing new under the sun. In 1970 a petro-based currency briefly competed with marbles and Captain Scarlet/ Joe 90 / Battle of Britain chewing gum cards as a currency in the UK.
