I need a back protector and think I'm going for D3O (seems to be well thought-of and I already have some D3O hip armour which I do rate.

There are quite a few available (level 2, size XL) from different manufacturers; eg: Held (£30), Furygan (£36), Klim (£50), Rukka (£75).

Is there really going to be any difference between these, given they are all level 2? Any reason to buy, say, Rukka rather than Held at 2.5 times the price? (I suppose the dearer ones could be 'better' than CE level 2, but looking at Rukka's website they make no such claim about their back protector, just that it 'meets' level 2.

(Or am I on to a hiding to nothing with D3O - is there better out there?)

Hi.

As an alternative, have you considered a separately-wearable back protector? Perhaps not quite in your price range, but I am thinking about the extended coverage these offer - from base of the neck to coccyx - compared to the more limited coverage of an in-jacket protector. I use a Forcefield L2, and honestly do not notice it when in use. Untested in impact, thus far, so that is all I can offer in terms of experience.

I guess there's an argument for both, of course, and there is no telling how you will hit the ground if you are unfortunate to do so...

I am not conviced by d3o. They do not say how much energy is absorbed before it turns solid. My first running shoes had it and after a few runs my fibular had a stress fracture.

+1 on the L2. Once warmed it forms to the shape of your back and you'll barely feel it's there, plus is transferrable from jacket to jacket.

Be aware though that I've had issues where the coccyx part of the protector can pop out of my leather jeans and gets itself wedged into the strecth-panel that forms the zip in my 2 piece suit. This then causes the back protector to ride up and obstruct my helmet which can be annoying. Worth doing a full racing crouch with suit and protector on prior to buying... or just get the forcefield insert.

On the other hand I am happty with D3O - after somersault the bike has landed on my back and I still have the same D3O protector in one of my jackets...

Hence I rate them and have all my jackets fitted with D30.

I took the D3O rudimentary 'rectangle' out of my jacket and wear a Forcefield separate protector which straps to me rather than residing in the jacket. I've no evidence to suggest that the D3O item is poor just that I think the Forcefield is better. Feels nice on and covers much more of the spine. This is the variant I have: https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/195413
