PostPosted: 07:59 - 09 Jan 2018    Post subject: Windows 7 crashing/BSOD Reply with quote

I've been having a BSOD/screen freezing issue for a while. I've tested the memory with MemTest86 (no errors), upgraded my CPU during this time (had crashes with both), and other bits such as my PSU are from a system I didn't have any issues with.

I suspect it's the GPU, as before it happens the mouse slows down, and it starts behaving like an old graphics card without much memory.

Anyhoo had a crash this morning and it actually made a (mini) dump for once. I've loaded it in BlueScreenView and it says crash address: ntoskrnl.exe+a63a0, but I'm a bit out of my depth with this so don't really know what it means.

Any ideas/tips would be appreciated.

It's more than likely the GPU if you suspect it.
Have you tried new drivers?

I've gone back to the launch drivers. I thought it was the (nvidia) HD audio driver causing the problem, so updated the GPU drivers to the current ones after a couple of days without a crash, then it crashed again this morning.

Temperatures on the card ok?

If you push it hard, does it happen more frequently?

Not sure about temps but all the crashes have been on the desktop, when browsing the internet etc.. Gaming (not that I do much) has been fine.

If it was stable under the earlier driver, I suspect the new driver is the problem then. Find a release that's newish and try that.

Do you have any sort of OC on either the GPU or CPU?
Have you increased the voltage limits?

Can you upload the dmp file somewhere?

CPU and GPU are both at stock speeds. I've been a little worried about temps with this CPU but a pal assures me it's fine Shifty I also ran a GTX 580 without issue, then upgraded to a 680 around the time this started happening.

Here is the dump: https://www.mediafire.com/file/d5ynooj8596776p/010918-9016-01.dmp

It also saved a sysdata file (?) and gave me this message when I booted back up...

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen

Did you fully uninstall the old drivers when you upgraded the GPU?

I used to get an issue a few years ago with AMD CC where i had to run a bat file (TWL i think it was called) to aggressively get rid of all traces of any old drivers.

Does Nvidia have any form of ULPS?

Have you ran a chkdsk?

nirsof bsd not giving a huge amount of info, might need to load the dump using windbg.

EDIT

Google fu also recommending running this into CMD:

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Could also run sfc /scannow

have you still got the 580? if so I'd switch back to isolate and confirm its the card causing the issue.

edit: out of curiosity is your cpu overclocked?

Yeah clean install of drivers. Not checked the drive but I was using this SSD in another system without issue (same windows install).

Done a memory test but not through windows, I'll probably give that a go to make sure. Not OC'ing.

Nah I sold it already Brick Wall Got another GPU in a different system I can swap with though.

However it seems my suspicions about temps were right. I was working in 3ds Max, temps were holding in the low 60s, it was taking ages so I did something else. Came back to check on it and...

Shocked

I don't think that's the cause of the problem as my i7 chip never ran this hot (and I was still getting BSOD). This Xeon chip seems to run hot though. I've got a better cooler which should do the job, but I stopped using it cos the thing was so f'ing loud, being 3 pin I can't use Q fan Neutral

the IHS won't be massively far behind those core temps so you're going to be over the limit.[/url]

It seems ok now, apparently at 100° they throttle back to prevent damage. I'll fit the Thermalright Ultra-120 tomorrow as I have to lift the mobo and re-install the bracket Brick Wall Hopefully that'll do the job, if not I'll go back to the i7 chip.

Am I out of order suggesting upgrading to Win 10, you can still get a free download until the 16th Jan 2018. Maybe this might fix a corruption in your drivers. Smile

Water-cooled? I repeated the experiment with the better cooler (importing in 3ds Max + encoding a video) and although it got worryingly close to max temps it sat most of the time around ~50 (low 40s during normal use). So I think it'll be ok... at least until summer. Just gotta get a new (4-pin) fan as this one is...

And yes Windows 10's pure aids.

Update: I installed another GPU (an ATi card) and had no crashes. Then I switched back to my AMD system with the GTX 680 and its been fine, so I'm guessing the crashes were due to a random incompatibility issue on my Intel system, I'm guessing with the mobo or maybe a bios setting?

It's kinda annoying but the AMD is Sata III, has USB 3.0, and runs a lot cooler than my intel system (particularly the Xeon chip), even though the AMD has the stock cooler and the Intel a Thermalright Ultra 120 Rolling Eyes

I'm glad the GPU isn't f**ked Thumbs Up
