That's a shock, it sounds like the road had to be cleared for the fire engine, and no-one was actually there when it started.
The basic structure might be salvageable with new roof?

Possible insurance scam I reckon, stupidly busy during the summer, dead over winter, probably a pain to manage. I haven't had food there in years just too expensive, prefer the petrol station at Alston for my pasty needs Surprised One thing that is annoying is bike events were just starting to kick off a bit, Suzuki have been there a few times, Honda too. Maybe if the council made it into an unmanned visitor centre (and fixed the horrible car park) it would be ok.

Has been up for sale for a while too... didn't sell. Burns down... hmm. Coincidence? Maybe. Hotel? Trivago.

Catches fire when the fire brigade couldn't get to it, during off season, while for sale? Sure, I'd assume insurance job until proven otherwise. Or just burning it to get rid of the rates liability - you can't give away some properties now that even empty buildings get billed by some councils.

Well there would be frost protection heating running unattended.
Given the somewhat ramshackle layout I suspect it might just get bulldozed and grassed over, since it sounds like a money pit.
It's not like a substantial historic Pub with accomodation such as Tan Hill.
More like a glorified roadside cafe

The last time I was at Hartside cafe it was grubby, cold, felt like a works canteen, the staff were rude the food was average. Maybe if they rebuild it thing may improve.

It was sometimes nice to have a bit of shelter from the wind though. It has been said the owner wants to get it back up and running again.

The cafe just down the hill on the Penrith side is much nicer and doesn’t have a ‘biker cafe’ tax.
