Got the new The Breeders album on CD earlier and ripped it into iTunes.
I'm on the second listen and so far, it's pretty good and back to their early '90's sound.
Definitely a grower.

Today is the end of NME in print form.
Personally I had major love&hate with all music press and still do. (pitchfork and RS you loveable gimps)
NME did have some golden years though as did MM and Sounds, and without them how else was a youngster able to find the latest thing or indeed be educated in the oldies and classics.
So from roughly '79-03 I bought one, both or sometimes all of the weeklies and they were thoroughly read and digested and out shat the desire to get on the train to manchester (waste of time going local unless you wanted Dr Hook or Yes or ACDC).
If you wanted the music that inspired the big names, the music that the big names copied (and still do) if you wanted to listen to a band called Peter and the Test Tube Babies because ....well why the hell wouldn't you for chrissake! You would return and that was your Saturday night sorted and the following days until Wednesday whereupon you'd be disappointed if the paper delivery was delayed.
The interviews could be sublime and ridiculous and hilarious and scary and intriguing, hinting of misuse and abuse and that was just the journalist who really did live the lifestyle...well some of them did, others just pretended. The photography was superb...iconic images.
ok ok rose tinted specs off time....they were also a bunch of self serving middle to upper class dorks who had failed in their own quest to be a rock n roller...latched onto the right people and had passed their English lit and lang A levels whilst the authentic rockers were already onto their 2nd brandy of the morning...but I still have to say....
Thank you New Musical Express, and Melody Maker and Sounds. The young people of today will never know how you smelled and how sometimes you were still warm from the press.
Oh and they did giveaways, which I managed to hold onto a few...lost others during house moves and splits and left flexis at parties or turned them into ashytrays or simply binned them.
Here's what I have left from the NME era.

Record Mirror cost more..well it had staples for one thing and a shiny cover. An old fashioned NME/Melody Maker ..well you could keep you and a friend dry should you get caught out in a shower.
Big stacks of them I had...this is all that remains...a torn poster of Joy Division.

Ahhh it's miles better now. I have heaps of new music and the ability to find information about them instantly.

Regardless of the fact he did all the music himself and the vocals at home in a wardrobe and the lyrics at the time were the sharpest thing this side of the Atlantic I just love it. Bulges with humour t'boot.
Pretty good live too, which isn't the case for a lot of that ilk.

There's something about that record, just stands out on its own.
Listening to blinded by the lights, and you're just there off your tits in that club with him.
I like to think of Mike Skinner as the white eminem ____________________

I own a lot of music, this is the only album I can listen to end to end without skipping a track.
Never fails to put a smile on my face.
