Thought I'd make a post about licensing requirements for Reliant 3 wheelers as I've seen a few full of confusion.
The short and curly of it is if you are over 21 and have a full car or bike license, you can drive one. Restricted bike licenses are a no-go as they exceed the max power output. They are registered as trikes not cars, so fall under cat A.
If you have a car license, go to a car insurer. Bike license you can try car insurers, and some will give you a policy however they may try and back out in the event of a claim so that would be a court job to prove you are licensed. Bemoto seem to be excellent for trike insurance (£1300 less for me than Adrain Flux!).
Towing is a bit of a grey area. There are no towing restrictions on the cat A license as the law for towing with a motorcycle is pretty simple to follow. Single trailer with simple weight and size limits, there appears to be no concerete towing laws for trikes. The cars were not type approved so don't need a type approved towbar, you could theoretically tow 4 trailers as there's nothing to say you can't and no weight limits so unless you obviously overload the poor thing, you should be OK towing small caravans, trailers, other reliants etc.
Please add more to this if you have any information or experiance
I did cock up though, don't need to be over 21 with bike license, but do with car.
License information from the horses arse:
Category A
You can drive:
motorbikes with a power output more than 35kW or a power to weight ratio more than 0.2kW/kg
motor tricycles with a power output more than 15kW
You can also drive motorbikes in categories A1 and A2.
Category B - if you passed your test on or after 1 January 1997
You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).
You can also tow heavier trailers if the total MAM of the vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500kg.
You can drive motor tricycles with a power output higher than 15kW if you are over 21 years old.
Physically disabled drivers with provisional category B entitlement will also have provisional entitlement to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles.

The Reliant could be driven on a motorcycle licence for years, I had one back in the 80's way before I ever had a car licence. That was pretty well the reason Reliants existed.
They changed the law to having to have a car licence to stop this but then fell foul of car driver being able to drive/ride bike based trikes without taking a bike test so changed it back.
Anyway, a Bond Bug is the best 3 wheeler. ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |
