Unless you are buying top of the range acoustics, amp, deck, stylus, etc, stick with mp3's.
Newer buy albums, waste of time, usually digital to vinyl !!, as opposed to analogue to vinyl
If you have your own old stash, play once, record using audacity, never play again ..
Still, if you prefer, then waterstones over a cup of coffee, whilst wearing a cravat, will suit you down to the ground.
I'm old enough to remember the contest between 16 track & tape, let alone vinyl & cd.
Forget vinyl, go for the best lossless acoustic solution available, but skip vinyl !! Unless of course you have a beard & tache !! ____________________ Beware what photos you upload, or link to on here, especially if you have family members on them |

Or
Buy vinyl because you like it.
Treat your player to a new needle and enjoy the crackle.
Vinyl sales are soaring so it's not as cheap as free mp3s (do people still use that old format?) via torrent. I think streaming is where the cool cats are at.
I'm beardless and have bought vinyl since I first nicked it in the late 70s.
I buy it (plus D/L and stream) because it's a brilliant format for enjoying the music and artwork by your new favorite artist. Some music does sound excellent on vinyl...mainly the music originally created for vinyl (obviously).
It won't do the ultra sub frequencies nor the upper highs but then again there are very few people who have a system that can do 30hHz or 22,000Hz nevermind accurately.
Creating vinyl has more thought put into it.
Playing records takes effort but is more enjoyable.
The ephemeral stuff about vinyl is also valid.
I have objects that evoke memories, contain gig tickets and flyers, have signatures have my schoolboy scribblings on, have scratches on the intro to Iron Man by Black Sabbath because I was showing off jumping over a table at a party and went flying into the record deck. Or the B side of Screamadelica which has a burn hole from ....Yeah good night.
What music do I recommend?
Just get what you want and if at all possible get it new. Support the artist...power to the people...ban the bomb etc etc.
2nd hand vinyl from anywhere is not cheap even charity shops and car boots have twigged it's en-vogue again, that's why mint or at a push ex/ex is preferred. Best to spend a bit more on something that won't skip and jump..until you knock the tonearm and invent new swear words. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

Buying vinyl, I guess it depends what you're looking for, if you want old stuff, got to a record fair, or a specialist shop, they have tons of pre-owned stuff. If you're buying it for the music and not the rarity value the prices are very reasonable!
Sometimes you might find what you want in a charity shop, I have in the past, loads of 45's for 50p to £1! If you're lucky you might buy a 45 that turns out to be worth a fortune, like I did!
If you want new music then you'll have to fork out for the vinyl when it's released!
A few years ago I was on the brink of selling all my vinyl, fortunately I realised my error, and cancelled the sale at the last minute.
So glad I did, listening to vinyl is an "experience" you can't just FF the tracks you don't think you'll like!
As HT says your own old vinyl are like old friends. On certain, well played, LP's and 45's of mine I can tell you where every single crackle is, which is somewhat reassuring!
As far as audio quality is concerned, even a non audiophile like myself can tell the difference between Vinyl and digital.
I have a few LP's duplicated on CD's, played on the same system they simply do not sound the same, the digital versions are the poor relation! ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

I'd buy loads of 1960s/1970s progressive rock, even if that's not your cup of tea the album cover artwork is awesome. Back in the day the album cover was a big part of the experience, something we've sadly lost today. ____________________ They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa, hey-hey,

As above, replace the stylus, + or - cartridge depending on the type of machine you have.
last new LP I bought came with a load of artwork, the CD and an MP3 download link included in the price. Increasingly common thse days.
Also worth getting a couple of cleaning cloths and some IPA for cleaning the records.
Must own is as personal and selective as what bike you have. I like owning Californication and OK Computer on vinyl. You can probably still get those new. Lose Control off Ash, 1977 is usually the first track I put on to test a new setup. Also buy Holsts Planets suite, play it loud. Oh, and Easy Rider Original sound track appears in most people I knows vinyl collection. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. One of those wish-list things...just need the house to fit it in.
Whilst I'm here I am going to make a recommendation of some new music that sounds excellent on vinyl compared to the lossless files that accompanied them.
Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression. (Melodic Soft Rock). Sounds like Iggy is singing right in front of you. The fuzz on the Bass is deep like a new shagpile carpet. The Drums sound open and natural. Guitars have a nice 'phase' sound without loosing any weight i.e not shrill. Backing vocals are sublime.
Overall a smooth sounding record.
Bossk - Audio Noir. (Ambient Slo-Mo Metal). Lures you in as it's a very dynamic record...all cute and quiet. Nice wide spread of stereo..Then Bam! In with the thud of Drums, Chugging of bass and guitars and vocals growled just enough to not understand everything.
Drums again sound natural and you can sense the type of environment the guitars were recorded in.
Overall it has a balanced sound and the dynamics mean you want to crank it up and when cranked it retains balance.
C.O.A.M - Hormone Lemonade (Electronic Hybrid music) The best sounding out of those mentioned. Full Deep Solid Bass, the type that makes your stomach rumble. The many layers of synths are so easy to pick out and lock into then a new one sneaks in and another.
I have a MS20 and I'm hearing that MS20 as it's supposed to sound.
The filters sound squelchy. The drums sit back as with all the arpeggios it could get messy were it not for excellent musicians, mixing and mastering.
I know the band use old gear and record to tape, they are meticulous.
Instrumental records of this type work harder to keep the listener interested and Cavern of Anti-Matter make it sound easy.
I played the downloaded mp3s whilst painting the kitchen...Perfect accompaniment. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

Mrs.Fizzer and I won quite a few vinyl records between us.My very first record that I bought was back in 1968,which was the 45 by The Beatles "Let It Be".It is a bit of a classic now and it has quite a few scratches on the tracks, but it is the memories that go with owning that still, after all those years.
My favourite 33 is "Sticky Fingers" by the Rolling Stones. The original front cover has a genuine zipper and it still works.
My youngest daughter has an app on her phone so that she can zap a bar code on those album covers that she might find at a boot sale or a charity shop and she utilised this to scan a few albums that we have.Nothing came up as being worth mega bucks, but as many of my albums have only been played the once, due to me buying them and then recording them straight to cassette (due to being in the Navy) then there are few if any scratches on them.
One album that I can listen to over and over is "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac.I have this on vinyl,music-cassette and on CD.
Then there is "Dark Side of the Moon",again, little played and I have that on all three also
I used to have a turntable that was direct drive, with a strobe so that I could fine adjust to just the right speed. But the speed control went u/s and the parts were not available so as to repair it,so it went to where so many great turntables now reside. So,the other Xmas,Mrs.Fizzer asked what I would like as a gift and a new turntable was acquired from Richer Sounds.Once connected up it was great to listen to the likes of Phil Collins's album "Face Values" that Mrs.Fizzer has in her collection.
There are far too many albums, some 200 in all,on the shelf in the front room, that it is starting to sag a bit in the middle.... ____________________ Just talk bikes. What else is there?

The cheapest way to buy vinyl is to bid peanuts on boxes of records nobody else wants, on ebay and the like. Trouble is, there is a reason nobody wants those records as they tend to be the sort of thing even Tony Blackburn won't play. If you aren't that selective about what you want to listen to, a large collection can be purchased for very little money. It is a daft thing to do however, as you will end up with much junk that collects dust and will eventually need taking to a charity shop.
Identify what you want to own and listen to, and learn how much these records sell for by using Ebay 'sold' listings, Popsike etc. Then seek and ye shall find... Ebay used to be a good place to look, but nobody gets a bargain there anymore. Charity shops likewise as most are trawled regularly by dealers. I am told that car boot sales can still be good provided the dealers don't arrive at silly o-clock and buy all the decent vinyl as people are setting up.
Your best bet is probably word of mouth - if you know anybody who does house-clearances for example, asking them to let you have first dibs can work. Also relatives and friends can put you in touch with people who are moving house and want to make space.
As for what records to buy, I agree with Suntan Sid that Dark Side of the Moon is a good place to start. You can still pick up a decent 'later press' for £15 if you aren't bothered about posters, postcards etc. You will find that certain bands are more collectable than others and prices vary tremendously from gendre to gendre. As with bikes, people are reliving their youth with vinyl, and what was popular 40 years ago is popular again now.
Oh, if you come across any Ozzy-era Black Sabbath on Vertigo, do let me know and I'll offer you a couple of quid for each LP... You'll soon savvy up!
Condition is evertything, as you won't play a knackered record more than once.... ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

Re. gear, you can still pick up cheap hi-fi from ebay and the like. You will find that all combinations of amps/speakers sound different and that much fun can be had buying old stuff and experimenting with it. You can still pick up decent old-school 'budget' amps for less than £100, and speakers likewise. At the last count we had 7 amps (I think...) in the house, with my favourite a Cyrus I bought recently for not a lot. What was good years ago will if still working be good today. What was shite will still be shite... ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M
