I congratulated myself a few months back for curing my 'low winter sun' problem by running a strip of duct tape along the top of my visor (as suggested by a BCFer, IIRC?), but having removed that for the summer I'm now left with streaks of gluey gunk in its place, which will not succumb to anything 'delicate' I throw at it, including soaking overnight in water (well why would it, it's bleedin' duct tape, innit?)

I know a meths-soaked rag would have it away in short order but we're not allowed to get anything remotely solventy anywhere near our visors are we? Any ideas? How much would it actually matter (on the visor rather than the helmet shell?

But thinking about it I suppose I've already sinned by exposing the visor to the solvents in the duct tape adhesive for several months. Um, bollocks?

WD40 might do the trick, although I would try it on an out of the way bit of the visor first.

Thanks. I'd agree, but is that going to be any 'safer' than my bottle of meths, or any other solvent?

captain hindsight says: "you shouldn't have used duct tape. electrical tape does the same thing but doesn't leave the sticky residue"

another vote for WD-40. Have used it before on visor and lid to get months worth of shite/flies/motorwayJiz off.

HG Visor Cleaner is (was mainly) Isopropyl.

Meths would probably do it.

I do not get much more than a year out of a visor and use tint, iridium or my sun-shade-thing inside the helmet. (Which is Iridium now too. Cool )

The duct/duck/gaffa tape adhesive probably does as much 'harm' as a cleaner would do or is there no advice/myth for duct tape adhesives yet?

I've used WD40 before and it got into the pin lock things in the sides of the visor and now it's cracking like crazy paving from those points. I'd go for warm water with soap

Put the tape back on it.

Take off visor - fit new visor.

Reverse next winter.

20% hydroflouric acid ought to shift it.

In seriousness, most visors are polycarbonate. Here's a list of what you can and can't put on it:

Paraffin jumps out at me. As does ethanol up to 96%.

GlueyGunkPal®

Hot soapy water and some gentle agitation ought to do it.

I use the Tesco's cheapest wash-wipes to shift summer bugs from visors, and judging from the smell they use IPA (iso-propyl alcohol).

Lastly would the gunk peel away if you put a fresh strip of tape on top and immediately removed it?

You can get food-grade mineral oil, for treating wooden chopping boards and such, which I find is quite good at getting sticky tape residue off things, and I imagine* being food-grade it will be fairly innocuous chemically and not melt your visor.

I use isopropyl alcohol and cheap microfiber cloths to clean visors, have done for years.
It should shift it.

Thanks for all the tips - appreciated. Buying a second visor for winter use is undoubtedly the best - but shit, £60 for my Neotec? Hmm, will have to think about that one. Shocked FWIW I also emailed the helpline of my helmet manufacturer (Shoei) - when you pay that much dollah for a crash hat you hope someone might get back to you - they did:
Shoei wrote:
the advice I have to give you is Shoei's general advice which does not recommend using anything other than water and a mild soap the clean helmets and if there are any adverse effects to your helmet as a result of using anything else, it would not be covered under the warranty.
That being said, if you wanted to, we have used isopropanol to remove remnants of adhesives on helmets, you can simply put some on some kitchen paper or soft cloth and wipe the affected areas which we've found to be very useful. We'd strongly advise against using anything like acetone which will strip the paint off the helmet.

So, amidst the arse covering (and they were clearly referring to the helmet shell rather than the visor - don't know if they are odentical materials or if that makes any difference?), they suggest isopropanol - nice one fireyphoenix!

Thanks that's really interesting. The paraffin gave me a "WTF? Really?" moment before I read the datasheet and found that it also listed "kerosene" (aka paraffin in Merican-speak) to which Perspex is "not resistant". Guessing that the 'paraffin' on the list (graded "resistant", ie safe) is actually the pharmaceutical grade stuff you can buy at the chemist to treat constipation etc. Shocked )

But then again, "Petrol" is graded "limited resistance" whereas "Gasoline" and "Premium petrol" are both graded "resistant" which is a bit... weird. Mind you, I'm delighted to see several other potential cleaners make the cut for "resistant", including beer, chocolate, tea and cement. So plenty of choice there.

Interestingly, on the other hand isopropyl alcohol (ie, isopropanol) scores only "limited resistance". Maybe better stick with chocolate then.

Why take it off? I have a DIY visor sticker I leave on all year round. It's better than switching visors (with a tinted one), although I'll concede it doesn't look as good.

I wouldnt put any solvent on polycarb or perspex... While polycarb might be more resistant, i cant help but think it might make it go a little milky.
I wouldnt risk it...

Umm
Have you tired the obvious? Hot steam from the kettle? honestly.. it desolves the glue far sooner than the carbs melting point.

I use hot steam from the kettle to remove the gum glue from jars lables....
