I've just done the air filter and greased the coil sticks (they can corrode and get get stuck - Nutsy - do this before your tank goes back on) on my er6 (2010). Whilst not essential, it makes it far easier to get the airbox off if you displace the loom but if you're just changing the filter there's no need to go near it. Only required to access the plugs so I'd suggest an assembly error.

Good idea but not all grease is similar.

Most common grease is soap based Base oil and common Soap with some stuff added like Lithium/molybdenum etc for 'reasons'.

The problem with soap based grease is that they are not all water proof so can break-down in contact with water.

It may be OK as the grease will be removed and replaced as maintenance work is regularly done.

We use conductive paste on High Voltage pins from big Diesel Generators to the rectifier house. It helps prevent arcing and lets the pins slide out whenever we move. (We move every few months.)

Some wankers have used GP grease before which is not suited for that application.

If the mechanic was surprised that it had not been noticed at the PDI, then perhaps the manufacturer had issued a service bulletin about a known problem, not serious enough to merit a recall notice.
In that case, it should have been checked

Silicone is good in block connectors places it wont get washed out ect.
.
For exposed single terminal connections like battery starter motor ect I use a grease made for jetskis called Aquaslip as i live on the NW coast.

Keeps the connection in top shape and the water out while stopping it seizing up.
Good stuff Smile.
