I know there are a few car mechanics on here so can anyone give me a ball park figure what a garage will charge me for parts and labour to replace the steering rack on an 08 2 litre Auto C-Max?

I just want to have a price in my head for phoning for quotes as I do not have a clue what sodomising I'm looking at.

Same problem with my Doblo - £150 exchange and DIY or presumably another 100 to fit etc. Drove it out the garage a week ago having had new strut and top mount fitted and she promptly blew the flexi and then this!

Almost sorry I laughed at your recent mishaps Laughing

Why do you think you need a new rack?

It's dumped all the fluid so I'm guessing its seals. I will get it up on jacks and have a proper look tomorrow but the ford forums pretty well say to replace the rack in those circumstances.

So just want an idea of what a reaming I COULD get. Laughing

£150 to 200 labour. Shop around, the well established garage compared to the back street garages vary significantly. I had my van struts sorted and it was 100 quid labour as opposed to £230.

With back street garages your dealing with the owner in most cases and get the most care most of the time. The more flashy garages have receptionists and bigger overhead as your paying for more staff and usually someone behind a desk with no clue

Racks aren't that common on those for leaking. More likely to be a pipe that runs from the pump to the rack.

Got under it today. It's leaking out of the drivers side dust cover on the end of the rack so presume a seal has gone.

You had me hoping there for a while. Crying or Very sad

That's pretty expensive, rack should be around £200 for exchange and 2 to 3 hours labour at £60 per hour for an Indy puts it at around £400 with VAT included.
Ford dealerships charge £90 per hour not including VAT round my way.

Concorde, QCS, EE, A2 Cars and Formula 1, who were the cheapest. There were a couple of others who wouldn't even quote without inspecting the car themselves (which I can understand).

I tried one of these 'enter your job and people will quote' sites. It was a good thing I used my unimportant crap e-mail because it was just an avalanche of spam that followed with no quotes.

Did you try any places that mostly do minicabs? They tend to get through steering racks, and I expects your is mechanically similar to a Ford Galaxy.
