Hi All,
Purchased my first big bike recently - 97 Thundercat on 13k miles for a very decent price of £1400.

I am not very mechanically minded but I am quick to learn and do carry out research. I was happy to buy the bike with what I saw/felt but I would like to get it all checked over and a few questions answered.

I am located in Hayling, Portsmouth and wondered if anyone knew of of any workshop/garages that specialise in motorcycles? Better so, if anyone who knows their way around a bike could give me a hand and point me in the right direction beer money and a riding partner will be offered Very Happy

Thanks

I can't help directly, but having owned mine for 16 years, been an administrator of the Yamaha Thundercats UK forum for most of that time and also a member of the UK Yamaha ThunderCat Owners Group (UK) Facebook group, I might be able to answer questions (and I recommend you join the group too as there's a lot of people there from all over).

2018-1997 = 21 years
13k miles / 21 years = 0.619 miles per year

619 miles a year is awfully low. Have you checked the M.O.T history to see if the mileage has dropped from high to low at one point? (indicating an engine change).

First thing i'd do is take it out on a long run and blast the engine free of the cobwebs (if it really has only done that mileage) in all gears to see how it performs.

Secondly perform an oil change, spark plugs, filter (air and engine) and take a look at the pad depth and ensure the pistons are moving freely. Oh, and the chain tension.

Look at the tyre date codes to see how old they are, what tread depth they have and if they're still round (as they should be). Valve clearance is the only other job that might pop up (check service history or yamaha guide as to when valves need doing for that model).

I think largely it comes across that you may have purchased a bike that, for at least one point in its life, has been stood for a period of time (parked up and left alone). No really biggy if it has, as I say, just look at the condition of the consumables.

Why would the recorded mileage drop when an engine is changed?

No doubt this bike has had some time off over its life, and there are myriad reasons why it might be, not all nefarious. Checking the MOT history is a good idea though, to see if the mileage is cumulative or has been altered (again, there are reasons to do this and not all are nefarious).

I did think odometer reading reset upon having a new engine fitted. Feel free to educate.

Apologies O.P.

The bikes covered 13,000 miles since it was first put on the road in 1997. My calculation provides an average of how many miles per year that would have to be for it to reach that figure over its lifetime. As I say, though, it could have been sitting for a period of time.

Given O.P's post it seems like he's purchased fairly blind with minimal checks and wants someone else to ensure it's running correct, and is as should be, hence my advice.

All the cycle parts will still have done the odometer mileage if an engine is changed. And what if it’s a used engine, do you wind the clocks forward?

What you do is leave the clocks alone and maybe mention the new engine when you sell it, if it comes up or if it’s a saleable point.

Mileage can be altered if, for example, you replace the instruments. You can even wind the original odometer back and this is not, in itself, illegal. Claiming that the altered mileage is genuine is the problem.
