Got a new secondhand (apparently rarely used) scanner, and it seems no matter what I do the scans are dusty. There's a dust removal setting in the scanner software, but it slightly distorts the image and can also remove details.

Without dust removal tool:

With:

Any ideas? I don't recall having this issue before with other scanners, they were lower resolution but this is a 300dpi scan. I've cleaned the glass with a lint free cloth/proper cleaner as well.

Are the spots in the same positions with a different photo?
I wonder if it's more like stuck pixels in the sensor, assuming they have one...
There will be better ways to remove the specks in separate software

Nah they're in different places. I got it to bulk scan photos, not to have to touch up every image separately Neutral

Jeez I must need new glasses.
I had a job seeing the spots until I remembered i could CTRL +roll
to make shit bigger.

I scanned every fambly foto I had last Christmas ( usual shoe box stuff)and a lot of dust was actually on the pics not the scanner glass
Are you checking/cleaning the pics themselves?

The pics are fairly clean. I was wondering if micro scratches were being picked up.

This would be my guess too. Photos always seem to be very static(y)? and hold onto dust. Give it a little wipe with your lint free cloth and rescan, hopefully that will help.

I suppose what you want to work out is if the dust is actually there or not. It could be a faulty unit.
