Hello BCF...

Feeling a bit let down.

Instructed a decorator to prep and paint our hall / stairs and landing. Used them before and was really impressed last time around.

This time a different bloke turned up (I spoke to the original guy - he is recovering from an operation).

Anyway, the job includes all skirting, 5 doors. Gloss white (same as done previously).

Last time around (lounge) we supplied dulux brilliant white trade gloss for woodwork. 1.5 years in and thats still lovely and white.

This time around they appear to have used "Smokey joe nicotine stain effect white" (tm).

So... Can this just be gone over after its dried (effectively a second coat) or does it need to be sanded and reprimered?

He's also painted the radiator in the same, even though it's brand new and we hadn't asked him too....FFS.

Lots of little bubbles and drip marks in it too.

I've not paid him yet. I can accept some responsibility for not specifying the paint (strangely enough wanted it to lool like last time and didnt expect to have to hand hold him through the process) but feel he should take some responsibility also - am I being fair in expecting 50/50 in the extra work cost?

TL/DR

Can you paint gloss straight over gloss?
Am I being unreasonable expecting white gloss to look white (and then for decorator to contribute in rework / getting it right?)

Cheers!

They either get it the way you want it or no monies change hands.
If you've had to hold this bloke's hand, chances are he didn't think to stir the paint first.

You should be able to paint over but, I would test it in a small area first, some paints can react with each other.

But if your not happy with it get them to sort it out, i alway ask if they are going to supply the materials or if the want me to, mainly because I don't want to end up paying extra £££ for a bit of paint.

You can paint gloss straight over other gloss but I'd still sand it to roughen the surface and then give a couple of coats of undercoat.

In terms of accepting some responsibility for them using Smokey joe nicotine stain effect white ® rather than a high quality brilliant gloss white, no. That's their fuck up, you asked them to paint surfaces that are white so of course you wanted them to use white paint.

Doing a bad job of painting something which you didn't ask them to paint is the biggest problem though as getting rid of the drips and bubbles on the radiator is going to be hassle.

Why would you want them to do the extra work? They've fucked up already using shitty paint and painting something that you didn't want them to paint.

If they want paying for the work they've already done then they need to finish it to an acceptable standard, whatever colour they've used isn't what you wanted so you've no reason to pay them anything yet. They also need to make good the radiator they took it upon themselves to make a mess of. Laughing

At this point I'd do what Borg does and block their number. Wink

nope never, unless you sand it to within an inch of its life, always gloss on top of undercoat, it will save you from peeling it off later.
If the gloss is covered in runs and hes painted a new radiator i wouldn't pay him a penny personally, gloss runs are a cunt to sand down, especially when its new paint.

Not sure gloss is ideal for a radiator either, he should use a high temp radiator specific paint if doing it properly, I'd be at him to have my radiator replaced too. Sounds like he sent round someone who,d only slept with a painter.

I had my hall and stairs painted last year, because it's a three storey house and there's ten doors to do so I couldn't be arsed.
The decorator asked if we'd thought about doing the woodwork grey and we decided to go for it. It looks absolutely bitchin' now, she did all the skirting boards, doors and bannisters. Went straight on over the gloss and looks great with how it contrasts to the lighter colour on the wall.

Something like this:

I painted the master bedroom myself and used Wilko gloss and there's three doors in there that now look half yellow because of the crap paint.

I've key sanded old gloss and wiped it clean before re-coating with gloss again. Im no expert, but I think you should only ever use one coat of gloss and not multiple coats. I wouldn't paint over fresh gloss or wood that's caked in layers of old paint.

As for the radiator, I didn't realise people would even brush paint them? Fuck that, just mask the wall up and after a light sand, hit it with 4-5 coats of spray on radiator enamel, plasticote, smoothrite etc. Or that fancy in trend crinkle or textured paint. Who wants brush marks and runs on a radiator?
