My bike has developed a very loud ticking/clicking sound coming from the engine. The clicks get fast as you increase the throttle, now the bike struggled to start:(
Any ideas what it could be? The bike is a 1998 Honda Hornet 600

If it's a ticking and increasing with revs, the first thing I'd check is that you don't have a leak or hole at or near the exhaust manifold.

If it's more like a rattle, the 90s CBR and Hornet engines had a reputation for dud CCTs, so that would be my 2nd choice.

Third, when were the last time the valve clearances were checked and adjusted, if ever? Not likely, they should tighten up rather than slackening off, but I'm throwing it out there to win Internets points on the off-chance.

Got a video?

Rip up some thin paper into a thin strip and hold it at one end. Get the other end near the joint and look for the paper to be blown about

That sounds like the exhaust to me, at least on crappy laptop speakers. You'd think you'd notice a pinhole starting and enlarging, but you can get a whole section weaken and blow out surprisingly quickly.

If you even suspect that it's the exhaust, I'd start feeding PlusGas or another unseizing product (not WD-40) onto the studs ASAP.

could it possibly be the exhaust gasket rather than the manifold?

It's possible, although I've never seen (or heard it). Either way, get those studs lubed.

It could easily be one or more of the gasket rings that have burnt out. I had a couple go on my Hornet. I ended up with new headers though - the welded rings that the clamps tighten onto had eroded rather badly.

As Roger said, give the studs a good soaking with plus gas or another penetrating oil and leave it overnight to work before you try to remove the nuts - I'd recommend a 6 point socket too. Also remember that the studs are an odd beast, they reduce from M8 in the head to M7 for the nuts.

Good luck!

I know that sound, very similar to what my CBF sounded like recently, copper rings have gone for sure.

Just follow Islander's advice, oh if you have a rubber mallet handy, it will help.

alright thanks for the advice guys, I've got them soaking and have ordered new gaskets, cant do any harm replacing them even if its not that in the end i guess! Will have a proper look at the manifold itself once its off as well

Unless you snap one of the studs.

Pass the popcorn

Depending on access, I'd be tempted to try and dremel, saw or split the nuts off. Replace them with brass ones.

I must ask, although we now know OP's going to take the headers off, why would you lubricate the studs? Unless you take off the nuts and get some grease in the threads there's no need for lubricating the studs, for the purpose of preservation and/or future (in several months, years) removal of the headers. Whatever you spray or smear on the studs while the headers and nuts are on, won't help anything, as it will burn away and/or wash off, and the nuts are going to rust to the studs regardless.

Lube was a poor choice of words. Unseizing liquid or spray, onto whatever bits are going to have to rotate to get the headers off.

Copper grease and brass nuts when they go back on.

On my old 7r that was ticking/knocking like a bastard, while the bike was running I took a long screwdriver and placed the tip against each header pipe in turn, with my ear to the handle.

It highlighted the guilty pipe instantly, both nuts weren't tight enough and had rattled the header loose (I was likely in a rush after sticking the stick headers back on). The fact I didn't ride it much meant it was probably waiting to happen for months.

So yeah, get a screwdriver or similar out and give it a try

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks again for all the help, bikes running as it should again!
Turned out I was lucky and it was just the exhaust gaskets, one had half disintegrated, looked like the previous owner has put it in backwards when he replaced the manifold
