Having a right time selecting an alternate steed through cycle to work and being a bit of a melt about it to be fair

Running about on this https://www.dropbox.com/s/sq9bwtw8yjh7udp/IMG_20180510_232546.jpg?dl=0 (<12kg loaded) and enjoying and plan to keep for training / long road only rides, but was after something a bit more gravel/track capable with the idea of using it as a commuter workhorse and also for cycling with the other half as attempting to get her ass off the sofa.

Started with the obvious hybrids choice and narrowed it down to the following

Trek DS4 - https://www.evanscycles.com/trek-ds-4-2018-hybrid-bike-EV284331

Then I somehow got sidetracked in the shop and have considered the following.

Trek X caliber 9 - https://www.evanscycles.com/trek-x-caliber-9-2018-mountain-bike-EV311886
Trek procaliber 6 - https://www.evanscycles.com/trek-procaliber-6-2018-mountain-bike-EV311887
Tempted boardman pr 29er - https://www.cyclerepublic.com/boardman-pro-29er-mens-mountain-bike-2016.html

The idea being if I got a hardtale 29er, I could fit narrower gravel tyres, narrower bars and ends for the longer rides I'm working towards whilst retaining the bikes ability to switch back with little trouble if I fancied trying a bit of XC. Should be near as fast as a good gravel bike and the weight of those is comparable to my road bike Shocked.

And the other spanner is gravel bikes. People are a bit sceptical but they are right up my alley. Relaxed geometry compared to cyclocross whilst still maintaining a good speed position and multiple hand positions blah blah.

I think the first choice would be a giant tough road due to the really good tyre clearance and fair weight. https://www.bikeexchange.com/blog/giant-toughroad-slr-gx-0-2018-first-impressions

A couple of left fielders though well specced https://liphookcycles.co.uk/products/orro---2017-terra-105-gravel-se-disc-bike.htm
And https://www.mangobikes.com/shop/bikes/point-ar/point-ar-105/

Those last two being well specced but I cannot find out how heavy.

That's my conundrum, there are plenty of others in my data bank but these are probably my first choices.

I'm a bit confused as to which way you're swaying Laughing

Gravel or hardtail?

As am I Mr. Green

I think I'm going to settle on hardtail.
A hardtail XC can be made to go near as fast as a gravel bike. A gravel bike cannot compete with a hardtail on the rough stuff. I have a road bike already so.

I have a hard tail and a road bike, so I'd agree that's the way to go.

I use my HT mainly for cross country and casual rides, but have done some fairly tame downhill on it, so it's quite a bit more versatile than a gravel.
