Hi

I know nothing about cameras. I'm after a point and shoot foolproof camera to take with me to Canada / America / SA on the bike.

Budget say £100.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

The one on your phone would probably match a cheap compact camera.

£100.00 is right at the bottom end of point & click range..

If your budget can increase ..

Then you should look at something like these ..

Panasonic Lumix ZS50 / TZ70 ~£200.00, especially as it also has a view finder, a big bonus in certain light conditions

If not, ideally you'll want to find a compact, with a decent optical zoom, and a view finder .

You could look at something used such as the Canon S100/120 which is pretty good yet tiny.
I'd want something capable of stabilised video too even if you only did a few short sequences.
As suggested, you might be better just using a phone unless you spend more like 2x that.
Depending on the phone.
My refurbished Samsung S5 does very good stills and excellent video for under £100, and can record to removable 64gb SD (useful)

Canon SX series are good enough. Nice midpoint with the features of an SLR and compactness of a ... compact. They have quite good zoom for such a small camera too.

Dependant on model and what you're after, obvs. I bought the SX430 thinking it's an upgrade, which it was, of sorts. Epic zoom, something like 45x, but not quite as functional as my older SX170 on shutter speed etc. As a result, I'll be getting rid of the 430.

Read reviews etc. first then make me an offer if you still fancy it. Wouldn't want you to be hoodwinked like I was Laughing

I bought an SX500 IS from ebay for £90 and it was much better than I expected when I went on holiday (unfortunately it decided to escape from my bag at around 140mph... so I bought another)

For this price man your phone is your best bet.

The cameras on them these days are much better than what actual point and shoots where about 5 years ago.

If you were to say spread the budget to £200-300 i would suggest a mirror-less camera.

Small, has option of 12v battery charging, takes SD, lovely pics.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Panasonic-LUMIX-DMC-TZ30-14-1MP-Digital-Camera-Black/113029720795?epid=219492279&hash=item1a5118aadb:g:ZegAAOSw86JaZdAV

Used the lower model on my Spain trip, it was flawless and as long as you leave it on the iA option, it'll be as crisp as you can get without fiddling. I'd not consider anything else in that price range.
