I think that's the best general solution. I wouldn't like to rely on small lights, especially during the day - I prefer a large area of solid colour high up.
It's just tilting the odds very slightly in our favour either way, short of having a flashing beacon and a siren blaring, and even that doesn't always work.

Err... there is just Sooo much wrong in your opening statement..... USA 'ahead' of... well, almost anywhere in Europe really..... How old is thier 'Republic'? More, where did they get the idea from?!!?
CRASH HATS! Name three brands of Motorcycle Crash Helmet made in the USA..... Now name me ONE that may be considered in ANY WAY more advanced than anything out of Asia or Europe?
True.... The Bell corporation did sort of market the first 'dedicated' motorcycle helmet..... but slightly better at marketing than inventing, me-thinks.... the Slogan, got a $10 Head, buy a $10 helmet, still gets repeated today, my life-rime since Bell started it, in various forms... behind that slogan was a lot of hype over how they had developed their motorcycle-crash-helmet during the Bell X1 Bid to break the sound-barrier in the early 1950's...... Curiously, though for all their research and scientific... well, marketing spiel... basically all they came up with was a variation on the British Army 'Tropical' pith helmet of the 1800's..... using Polystyrene as the shock-absorber, rather than cork!!! And things haven't moved on much since in almost 50 years!!!! And definitely not under that brand-name!
Advanced? Remind me again what we were talking about? The 'Republic' re-invented, oooh.... about two thousand years after the Romans had 'sort' or proved IT DOESN'T WORK! after however many hundred years refining Helenistic Greek ideas on the subject!
USA.... great at re-inventing other peoples Ideas, and adding a big grin, with lots of polished teeth, to tell you why you should buy it!!!!
Oh... and this Forum... oh.. hold on a second.. Forum... what's the origin of the word again? I keep seeing a building with fluted columns., for some reason... maybe It'll come back to me... But in the meantime, this net-forum, is pretty much UK Based... two cultures seperated by a common language and all that.....
But back to crash-helmets.... one of the most advanced Skid-Lids of recent years, as far as I'm concerned.... is the one I wear..... A Shark Evoline.... its about the only 'flip' helmet that can be worn as either an open or full-face and flipped twixt the two on the move; and it has a very TRONesque lazer line design, in lurid green piping, that is luminescent.... or supposedly..... it's supposed to glow in the dark.... only in five years I have never seen it do so.... which all makes a mockery of things some-what..... but still... point IS..... its made it ITALLY!!!!!!
Meanwhile... crash-hats wont stop you crashing... all they can do is damp the hurt a bit, if you do..... you are a fool if you think that sticking your head in a fancy plastic bucket means you have 'safety' covered... you don't... by a long stretch.
Conspicuity... is what you are hinting at, though; idea that if you make yourself conspicuous, other road users will more likely see you, and so not run you over...... great idea.... they still have to LOOK first..... then understand what they are looking at... more still, realize that what they are looking at is something they probably aught do something to NOT crash into.... and still MORE know how NOT do do that.. and do it!
A lot of 'ifs' in the chain.... and you could have a brightly coloured neon sign on your head saying "DONT KILL ME".. and it would still be a bit hit and miss whether SMIDSY would take a blind bit of notice of it!
Put your failth in whet you can control... like a motorbike... not what you might buy... like a crash hat!
As said, I own one of the more technologically advanced crash hats of the last decade.. its not even designed in the USA, its designed and made it Itally! Features it has, by way of being a flip full-face or open helmet, and being able to flip' on the move; it's jet-fighter drop down sun-screen, its fancy day-glo 'hi-vis' paint scheme... really dont do much if anything over and above any other helmet, as far as putting protective padding where it may be more useful in a crash... just make it a bit nicer to wear, and easier to use...
As old addage, you pays your money and takes your chances. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Don't worry if you find that confusing: native English speakers often have trouble following Teflon-Mike's... thoughts. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Sorry for my bad gaffe, anyway thanks for the interesting answer, I also saw that your helmet has an affordable price, not as the one I posted, so for sure a better solution. |
