PostPosted: 11:56 - 25 May 2018    Post subject: Switching laptop between wifi and wired ethernet? Reply with quote

I most often use my (Windows 7) laptop at home sat in a docking station, attached to a couple of monitors, keyboard and mouse. The dock is hard-wired to my router for the best possible networking and internet access.

However, I do also sometimes use the laptop around the house in other rooms, where I use my wifi. The trouble is that if I have both the wifi and fixed ethernet connections enabled on the laptop, I often end up with the laptop sitting in the dock but still connected to the outside world via the wifi - I then wonder why my connection is so slow, until I disable the wifi connection.

So, what I currently do each time I take the laptop on and off the dock (which can do while it's powered up) is go into my Network Connections and manually enable/disable the two connections as appropriate. It's a ball-ache to have to do this each time, and I can't believe it shouldn't just happen automatically.

Any advice please?

Doesn't your laptop have a button you can turn your wifi off with (might be function + something)?

Is this what you need?

I'm certain both Windows and macOS prioritise wired connections over wireless by default, maybe the above will help.

Um - yes! Function + F8 does it nicely... Embarassed

Ah - exactly! As it happens, the menu bar was hidden in the 'View Network Connections' window, so I didn't actually even know of the existence of the prioritising function. It was actually set to prioritise wifi, oddly - I've never even seen that function before.
Thank you both - I wish I'd asked about 2 years ago now! Laughing

My work Dell does that, undock and it switches to the work wifi but will not disconnect wifi when docked for the faster connection. I was told to right click the icon in tray and disconnect wifi so it reestablishes the LAN connection

Boot in to the bios by pressing f11 go to Power Management (YES)

Then change wifi to use wired when cable connected.

This is standard on all Dell laptops.

What's wrong with your wifi if it's perceptably slower than your wired connection (which is presumably right next to the router)?
