My mate has a bike with a VW 1.9 TDi motor in it.

He says it goes up to about 120 in top before the turbo spools up, then the world blurs and all hell lets loose... Also 80mpg and reverse gear (which it needs) in which you CAN do reverse burnouts.

A previous incranation had the non-turbo version and no gearbox, just a direct shaft drive from the clutch. He reckoned he could let the clutch out fully at 10mph then wind-on to 110.

So it makes similar power to a lightly tricked up modern sports bike... but weighs over twice as much... more than a car I've previously owned.

Great if you're at a fa.... pub for the otherly inclined and want to show off how your transport is even stupider than other people's! Smile

Or just get a de-restricted ZZR1400 etc. Which would actually corner as well. Confused

I think many of these things come about when someone with plenty of time on their hands and good engineering skills find themselves in posession of a spare bike frame and a cheap/free engine.

Certainly what happened with my mate with ther TDi motor. I think he paid £120 for it and shoehorned it into a spare frame he had lying about with a few bits of selected scrap metal and componants. His use of an electric steeering assist servo unit to get a useable clutch was an act of pure genius.

In all probability, the impreza bike probably cost very little in terms of money to make, just lots of time. You can get a moderately high mileage impreza engine for under £500.

As said it's come about from some slightly eccentric loner with a yard full of old parts.

It would have been infinitely better as a trike though where you wouldn't have to worry about if it handles or not, and you'd have two big fat tyres to lay down your 200+ ibft to the tarmac.

I remember seeing a trike once built by the same sort of person, that started out with a Ford Essex and a Wade blower on the top. But it used to spray fuel from the carb all over the rider, so he converted to twin Escort RS turbos and SU draw through carbs instead. Proper Max max looking creation if nothing else.

Not a great reason to make it a bike though really? It's a long bulky (by bike terms) engine&transmission, that is against you by being longitudinal and big&strong enough to handle the power being sent to four wheels and abuse in a heavy car.

The wheelbase will be too long, and what sort of bevel box are you going to use to send the power to the back wheel? I can't see the point in starting with a motorbike chassis design that's going to be so long and not handle in a desirable way. Its a bit like those Chevvy V8 bikes, in that it'd be made just to say you've got such an engine on two wheels.

I'd rather ride a Honda Goldwing that would at least handle like a big dress tourer should. Sorry to be boring though!

It'd be like fitting a bike engine into a Land Rover just to say it's a new thing that no-one has done before?

They usually have a patio of dead bodies as well. No reason to congratulate them.

Never a good reason for a trike either! Wink

Didn't you mean to say that there's no need for these silly bendy leaning trikes with two wheels at the front, instead of a proper trike with a big beer barrel fuel tank on the back? Wink

Something about V twins having more torque than in-line 4s... Wink

They seem to have some sort of sense - like being able to go around corners without flipping over and landing on the rider!

I imagine it would look like someone perched on a collection of random car parts and scrap metal is rolling along towards you.

Its not for me. But i quite like someone has done it. Especially in such an 'unpolished' way.

I know this one. My mates one uses a car diff attached a spacesaver wheel with a motorbike tyre on it. He effectively has a PTO sticking out the back of it.
