I have a 1998 gsxf750 which wont run properly. It will tick over on idle forever in the year but when you put it under load, no2 cylinder dies and runs on the other 3 cylinders. I have had the plugs and coils changed, swapped the plugs around but still drops out on cylinder 2. I have had the electrics looked at and all the cables and earths are good, and all the ohms readings are within limits. both my self and my mechanic cannot work out whats causing the fault, I`m thinking ECU but not sure, so any info on this would be gratefully received.

Carbs or fuel injection?
How do you know no2 dies?
What about the valve clearances ?

Probably a stuck float or some obstruction in the float valve.

Before you go pulling the carbs off, try draining the contents of carb 2 into a clear glass and see if its full of cack.

Its carbs, the valve clearances have been done, and the exhaust pipe on no2 cyclinder is cold when the others are warm/hot.

temeluchus: the carbs have been checked and cleaned. float heights are correct and new fuel been added.

misread the first bit of your line.

It probably wont be the ignitor box as that would kill two cylinders if it wasnt firing a coil.

Could be an air leak, is the balancing spigot plugged? Inlet or airbox rubbers ok?

Did you replace the float valve? These cause a fair bit of trouble on Mikuni carbs.

If the carbs and ignition are 100% then something in the engine is worn or broken.

Maybe the slide diaphragm split/damaged. have you put the plug on the head to see if it does spark

As said (bypass2), do the carb slides all work?

if the diaphragm split the exhaust wouldn’t be cold,
as fuel from the main jet would still be making it to the cylinder, but that cylinder would just be strangled compared to the others.

Jaffa90: That is what I cant make out, why it ticks over all day long but put it under load and No2 cylinder drops out.
A100man: By a competent mechanic who races bikes.
Bypass2: all carb diaphragms have been replaced with new ones.

I have had all the plugs out and they all spark against the head, I`m at a loss as to what is causing this fault.

Have you tried altering the position of no2 to, say, position no. 1 in the bank and seeing if the problem follows it?

You're assuming two things 1) he/she is infallible 2) nothing has happened since.
