Scotch.gov decided to put an air quality monitoring station on Hope Street in Glasgow, right beside the diesel hell of Central Station, with diesel busses roaring up and down the road, and diesel taxis idling right next to the monitor.

They were astonished - astonished - to find that the air quality there wasn't all unicorn burps and fairy farts, and so of course Things Must Change.

Initially, they're going after busses, in a move so fraught with common sense that I find it hard to credit, but when that doesn't fix it, and neither does anything else on the roads because they're measuring but not considering emissions from trains, they will come for private vehicles sooner rather than later.

As usual, motorcycles and scooters aren't even considered except to slavishly follow their betters in London by proposing to punish anyone too poor to afford a Euro 3 hack.

I've vented my "modal shift" spleen just for the catharsis of it, and if you fancy sticking to the eco-zealots you can fill your boots here. Fill them with both barrels:

So nobody thought to spray expanding foam into them or even encase the whole thing in a hood with a HEPA air filter around it?

That's the second utterly appalling terrible incomprehensible government survey I've completed today.

In B4 ground level ozone.

Next big thing once they get bored of nitrogen dioxide. They had a go at it a while back but nobody bit. All those lovely electric motors sparking away.

You can actually smell it on Princes Street now.

Clothes that can cause Static Electricity should be considered too whilst they are at it.

Full LEZ by 2022.

No mention of bikes, of course, but "all vehicles."

Worryingly, Al Beeb are reporting Euro4 for petrol cars (2005) and Euro6 for death diesels (2014), despite the Cooncil's announcement not saying a word about it, only that "The policy to extend the zone to all vehicle types will be supported by an economic appraisal and there will be engagement/consultation with interested parties over the next 12-18 months in order that the process is proportionate."

Seems to me that the consultation has already concluded. I wonder if they remembered about bikes. Given how bike-hostile the Cooncil is, I am somewhat ascared that they'll go Euro4 for bikes. Pale

You'll be upgrading your Nazi tractor then, and not taking the Enfield on the nice days for a change. That'll make the air around the train station so much cleaner, everyone will thank you for it I'm sure.

I'll probably just be avoiding the city as much as possible. I don't have much need to go there at the moment either, just for the occasional night out. Looking to move up north by then anyway.
