I'd also stick a lean to type shelter on the side of the garage, or over the entrance, so you can wheel stuff out of the way when working and keep it out of light rain, it will make your garage feel twice as big

I used a cementitious floor levelling compound it was simpler and cheaper and is as hard a fcuk.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try to cover everything.

I'd love an Apex roof but it's too expensive to justify it, this at the moment is within permitted development, the Apex would require planning.

We have £13k to spend but would be nice to have some left to do up the garden or do the bathroom, a mates dad is doing it for me and all in said it'll be 9-10k. That's everything except electrics I have an RCD ready and an armoured cable that runs from the fuse box to the back of the house. I'll join it and hopefully get a mate or my dad to help with the CU. It should be easy enough though a single ring and some lights.

Floor isn't laid it's being done next weekend.

Fire Extinguisher is a must a friend of mine burnt his garage down and lost £££££ in bikes and tools.

I'm not gonna bother insulating it. My Dad's garage isn't insulated and I've never been cold in there for more than 10 minutes as soon as I start working I warm up I have an old oil filled radiator in the loft that'll end up down there.

As for Carpet I have an old rug I was going to use as a work mat thing.

It will be brighter than the sun inside it's the one thing I hated about my dad's Garage is it is so dark. I hadn't thought about Outside lights a couple of LED spots would be a good idea I reckon.

As for Tunes I might get an Amazon Echo, then I could Alexa Control the Lights/heater/door Mr. Green

Then we are probably already too late because plans will have been made and concrete ordered

Should have ordered a bike lift first like a Draper 37190 which you would then sink into the floor which would require shuttering aloung with 4"pipe as conduit for the air lines.

Sinking the bike lift into the floor would mean when down it wasn't in the way so doubling the use of one piece of space.

The window needs to be considerably bigger. In fact I would do away with both the window and the side door and fit patio doors. Free light is good and being able to open the garage to the garden will also be good.

Good idea that, I should be getting a lift sorted by cousin who runs a firm that builds and install lifts and loading bay equiptment. I was gonna wait till it was all setup so I know exactly where I want it.

I think you're making a mistake not insulating, but hey ho. I take it you're not insulating under the slab either? Are you putting a DPM under the slab? Both of those cheap to do but difficult to retro-fit.

I'd throw down a DPM and underfloor heating as its so cheap to do.

Unless your cousin is used to building lifts for bikes just buy a bike lift, it'll just work.

A 14cfm 150 litre compressor should run everything you might want without strain.
You need more than two air outlets, you will need one outside the door and ideally one outside the roller shutter in a locker.

For wall cabinets get Hilka metal ones, they can be had for about £100 each. Much better than MDF that will look crap as soon as some moisture hits them.

The bit you hate, a wall of locking tool cabs secured to the ground for all your tools and more. Then a butchers block worktop over the top with LED lighting under the cabinets aimed straight down on the worktops.

A retractable post behind the door would slow down ram raiders.

Network point to the house as well as conduit for cctv cables.

I think i'll stop there before I scare you too much. Thumbs Up

I'm fine with Storage I have loads cabinets from work all pucka Bisley metal ones and they cost nothing.

I don't know what DPM is other than Distruspted Pattern Material but I assume it's a anti damp thing. That's being done. As I said I'm not bothered about being warm in there 95% of the work I've done on bikes has been in my dad's single skin uninsulated garage I've never been noticeably cold in there for more than 10 minutes as soon as I start moving and doing stuff I warm up. I have rad to go down there which dad never did so I'll be fine.

I did wonder about Running CAT 5 but I reckon the WiFi would do. The builder is putting a tube in the base to run cables from the outside I can always add it after as the power cable is only going to be semi permanent I plan to do the garden and sink the cable properly in a few years.

I did what you said re LED lights in my kitchen. It's certainly an option, but I'm not certain I want cupboards above the benches yet, I'm going to wait till it's in then see and if I do get a sh kitchen for next to nothing and fit that.

As for the tool boxes I can't afford them there are a couple in Costco I letch over everyone but at £600 and £1500 I can't spend that, I probably have only spent £1000 on the tools I have.

I have a shoulder high cheap cab and a knee high roller unit that is quality. All of my tools currently fit in those fine. When I move into the garage a lot of it will be elsewhere I've got 3 boxes of fixings and odds that'll be stored better and some toole and will likely be wall mounted (Hammers, Chisels, pry bars, files etc.) That'll mean I've probably got 1/3 of the space free for more stuff and no plans to get any more stuff beyond specialist bits.

Was looking at Bench Grinders, is it worth going expensive? Was wondering if getting a cheap one and treating it as disposable is a good idea you can get them from like £20.

Rather than stand alone tool cabinets, build them in under the work bench..that way you dont have much except a tool tray on wheels. Cluttering the other walls/floor

Think this, but all the way along the wall.

You may not be able to paint it for a few months in that case.
Whichever paint you go for, check the data sheets for it regarding new concrete.
Torlife TP Satin, Blackfriars High Traffic or Coo-Var Profloor Plus are pretty hard wearing ones. (all 2 pack)

DPM - Damp Proof Membrane. Stops water (as vapour) seeping up from Middle Earth/Australia. It will help keep the place 'dry' less load for the building to deal with.
If you are using gas or oil heating then you also have to deal with the moisture they produce. It may 'feel' dry but warm air is loaded with moisture. As the air cools the water drops out and settle on valuable stuf to wreck havoc.
That is why you need vents. You canny have too many. (Almost). The trick is to have 'circulation' so a vent in the floor level and a vent at roof level will allow all that H2O to GTF oot the vents. It doesn't have much effect on heat loss

Cheap Grinder will annoy the fcuking life out of you. As soon as you offer up anything to the wheel the motor stops. Mad

They make a fcuking mess too...

That's all

That should just about cover a 5m extension into the garden, think of all the plus points - like less mowing Laughing

Seriously though, if you can, sink a couple of eyebolts into the new concrete whilst it's wet, a couple of feet apart somewhere near where the the back of a bike might be. Not an issue if you have a reasonable lift but if you have more than one project on the go and the lift is otherwise occupied it makes front end work easier. Bike on centre stand, strap over back end cranked down to the eyes, up goes front end and access for fork/headstock issues, they also come in handy if you need to get a good purchase point or for tying shit down - like the neighbour who's always bitching about the grebo out back with a huge garage or the missus... Wink

How is it that all the garage gurus, prior to HT's post, omitted to mention a banging noise system?

Got my storage sorted out, couldn't get the electric desks in the end but I ain't complaining. I reckon there is the best part of £5k (when new) there Shocked was all gonna be chucked most of it is in perfect condition.

I've got a couple hanging file cabinets, there a little lip on the bottom perfect to hold a shelf The runners must be strong to hold all the files so I reckon they'll make nice tool drawers

Also one of the desks has about 10 sockets under it covered by an RCBO which should come in dead handy. Thumbs Up

There isn't a single piece in this photo that I would put in a garage/workshop, none of it will have a high enough shelf load and noe of it has a high storage density.

I would suggest selling the whole lot on ebay and using the money to get a better storage solution.

One thing we are missing from this thread is you telling us what you are trying to achieve?

Without trying to start an argument you don't seem to be trying to build an efficient work space but rather a box filled with old office furniture.
