How we’ve improved the DVSA enhanced rider scheme

From today (18 June 2018) we've refreshed how the DVSA enhanced rider scheme works.

The scheme is for riders who have passed their motorcycle test and want to do some extra training to brush up on their skills.

In our latest blog post, Chris Parr, Assistant Chief Driving Examiner tells you about the work we've done to update the scheme and how you can join.

Read 'How we've improved the DVSA enhanced rider scheme'

Mentioned for general interest because it turns out that to become an Enhanced DVSA Derek, it turns out that you don't actually need to be a DVSA Derek... or even have an A licence.

I have just received an email suggesting that I might enhance my life if I book training

"You book an appointment with an expert trainer".

On my reading of their requirements, there's no requirement for the trainers to be trained in training. Thinking

Nobody tell Tef. Shhh!

Wut? It says on page 2 that you need to be dvsa instructor and have an advanced qualification.
Have I missed some loophole?

Ways to become a trainer
Apply to become a DVSA enhanced rider scheme trainer.

Get an advanced riding qualification if you do not already have one.

Pass a theory test.

If you’re not a direct access scheme (DAS) certified instructor, you also need to take a training course accredited by DVSA.

You must complete the training course within 2 years of passing the theory test, or you’ll have to start the process again.

Advanced riding qualifications
The advanced riding qualifications that are accepted are:

DVSA special test (gold or silver grade)
IAM Advanced Rider Course
RoSPA advanced riding test (gold or silver grade)
Diamond advanced motorcycle test or Diamond elite motorcycle test (if taken after 1 January 2017)

FTFY.

Fair point that you do have to do a training course, but it's a DVSA approved course, not a course done by the DVSA.

It just seems rather peculiar that the standards for being an enhanced trainer are less than those for being a regular trainer.
