Evening all,

I'm planning a run up the west coast to around Applecross next week if the weather holds, just an overnighter as I can get to Applecross in a days riding.

I'm planning on wild camping somewhere and looking to see if anyone has some suggestions for a good spot? I'll be going either tarp and bivi bag or hammock, either or. Somewhere loch-side or otherwise scenic would be nice. Must be accessible by crossrunner.

Id like to get away from people generally for a couple of days so I don't want to use the actual camp site at Applecross if I can help it for a change.

Suggestions appreciated.

Folks often wild camp on the grass above the beach at the opposite end of the bay to the main town. At this time of year, I'd be very surprised if there isn't someone there when you rock up though.

The owner of the campsite has been known to get shirty and come down all pointy finger but Sheldaig fire brigade have told him if he calls them out one more time to an under control campfire on the beach, they'll send him the bill.

I'm pretty sure that was his cue to wind his neck in, I've not heard of an incident for a while.

Cheers for the info. It doesn't have to be applecross itself, just that general area.

Again, not strictly wild-camping but there is an "official", free/donation camping area at Sheildaig at the top of the steep hill at the end of town (up the hill from the public toilets).

It was getting a bit ploughed up by motorhomes last time I was there but I suspect they may have pissed on their chips by now by either forcing someone into taking action to stop them going on or having chewed the entrance up enough to get stuck in the attempt.

There are loads of places you could roadside camp all round there though. My advice is to stop, get off the bike, open your visor and stand about for five minutes before you take any of your gear off. Be ready to run if the midges appear. They can be thick enough in some places that you wouldn't want to have taken your lid off when they appear.

I found chain-smoking helps. On balance, I think it'd be better to die of cancer than a billion micro-vampire bites Thumbs Up

Tip: have the Skin-So-Soft readily available. Apply as you remove your bike gear. Glove off, apply to hand and wrist. Other glove off, apply to that hand and wrist. Helmet off, apply to face, neck (don't forget to do behind your ears, dear), and hair. Eyebrows. Don't forget your eyebrows. Going for a piss? Shocked

I ended up on Skye instead. I'd never been so thought it might be worth the change. Found a cracking spot to camp beside a river with a nice view and bif telegraph pole to tie the tarp to. Got a good clear run at Glen Garry on the way up, fabulous.

Hope you left some of the sunny weather for me this weekend. I'm heading up in the direction of Gairloch.

I always find that Invergarry road inexplicably hard to ride and overtake on. I just can't get the feel for it somehow, I seem to cock up all the corners. I'll nail it one of these days.

I'm just hoping all the good roads aren't thick with campervans though. The NC500 has a lot to answer for!

CamperVans weren't a massive problem when i went up last month, they all pulled over to let me pass them. Only problems i had were with coaches & the packs of feral cyclists.

Traffic wasn't bad at all from fort William on. Before that was a little busy in places but nothing I couldn't pass. There was some real lack of skills on show with some of them though.

Fort William itself was shit. There's a really long roadworks escort in the 50 section leading into it (has that gotten longer? Found it very frustrating). Traffic in it was busy and there were some more roadworks on the way out.

Glen Garry was awesome. I caned it the whole way along there, everything I caught up with I was able to just go straight into the overtake. Just slotted together. One of those focussed runs that leads to big contented sigh as you slow down at the other end.

Yeah, that bit sucks balls. It's great bit if you're really early or late when there's no traffic.

Sooner they bypass Fort Bill, the better. It'll never happen though. They know full well the whole place would be a ghost town within 12 months if tourists had an option of going round.

North Ballachulish to Fort William used to be sublime but over the years the double white lines and the 50 limit has spread like a plague. Glen Garry is still brilliant as is Glen Shiel. Glad you got some good bike time.

Can't cost more than a Tram system for Edinbugh...

Naw, but you could take the 90% of traffic who have no business in Fort Bill either through quicker or round another way. Ring road kind of thing. Or stop local traffic using the A82

Or they could knock the place down. Probably save money in the end.

If I remember rightly, the bottle I had wasn't a cream, but a liquid. Trying to remember if it was actually a pump spray; not sure, but think it was.
In any case, if I had the opportunity, I'd dive in a bath of it fully clothed before exposing myself to the scourge!
