I thought you did have a garage outback, a fair sized breeze block building if I remember correctly?

You don't remember correctly, I do have an 8x10 metal shed with limited access due to a tree in the way and no vehicle access.

you have a clean slate, a fresh start at building a 'proper' workspace. even if you only use it once a year, build it properly now so that when you do use it, its an efficient and enjoyable space to work in.

Personally i wouldn't just go spending thousands on all new stuff either but there are some things, key items, that i wish i had spent more on when i moved in 18months ago and had a new garage to organize. Things i can't justify replacing now because they still work.. just not as well as i'd hoped.

The first being the benches and storage. When i moved in, i bought one of these:
https://wellstimber.co.uk/product/solid-heavy-duty-workbench/

I got the 8 foot one instead of two smaller ones. I'd never had a solid bench to work with and it was genuinely a joy to use.
I mounted a small vice to it (again something i ended up replacing) and the thing supports just about any amount of weight i put on it..

It wasn't long before i realised that the storage underneath it was wasted space and in a home garage, efficient use of space is incredibly important... The same size bench, with two lots of 6 heavy duty drawers would have meant i didn't have the need for a stand alone tool cabinet, freeing up floor space somewhere else.

There were already old kitchen cupboards fitted to one of the walls. I could not justify replacing them just yet as they 'worked'. They're falling apart though now and the day that one of them breaks completely, i'm going to rip them out and replace them with a row of these (which are what sickpup mentioned)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hilka-GWC2D-Garage-Wall-Cabinet/dp/B0150G6MEQ
Free is not always better.

My garage gets used almost every evening, tinkering with bikes, fixing the lawn mower when it stops working, fixing the cars, doing stuff for inside the house like cutting things to size, repairs etc etc Thumbs Up but mainly it seems its a storage area for everything that i'm not allowed to keep in the house Laughing I also built a 6 x 12 shed as 'storage'. No matter how big a space you have, you will find shit to fill it with

Things like a bike lift will make working on bikes easier.. storage and work bench will make EVERY job you do easier

Just my 2p though. Its all simple stuff but stuff i overlooked

I like that bench Seems very reasonable too, Although the bottom looks like a nasty trap for errant nuts and bolts, how are you finding that?

I agree free is not always better, but sometimes it could be, worth finding out before spending thousands. Laughing

For the price it is great. Sturdy as fk.
But yes, the bottom is a trap for anything that rolls. drop it past your legs and it bounces off a boot and rolls right to the back.
I put a length of square stock along the length of the bench which solved the issue most of the time. Thumbs Up

currently all my Spanners are in one draw of the cabinet,(50+ I'll be wall mounting them for ease of acces in the garage)

I didn't really notice this the first few times I read it but it stuck in my head so I went back to it.

I've said previously having spanners on the wall isn't the best idea. Easy to steal and check your home insurance as they may not cover them in an outbuilding outside of a locked tool cabinet but it was the amount in the drawer that I drew me back when added to this comment...

I'm just wondering if all these little efficiencies you've spend loads on have helped. Wink

And the answer is yes they do.

You have 50+ spanners in one drawer, are they in racks or just loose?

Mine are in racks and are easy to find, no sorting through they are just to hand which increases efficiency considerably. Cost is low, £15 for the racks.

60+ spanners in that drawer. 60 + sapnners on a wall is going to take up a hell of a lot of space as well, have you worked out how much space it'll take yet?

My spanner rack (in a draw) is a piece of mdf with nails in it to separate them, just like the racks do that sickpup showed. Cost me nothing as I had some mdf offcuts and nails that never get used. Just pre-drilled the holes and voila, neat and tidy spanner draw. Thumbs Up

Remember a tool cab should have drawers that can hold a minimum 40KG a drawer.

The Bisley drawers units are not the pukka storage units you think they are. They are very good for storing small items such as parts, bulbs, lathe cutters etc but thay are terrible for tools, try fitting a few sets of pliers in a drawer and you will see what I mean. Try fitting a set of spanners in one drawer and you will really see where I am coming from.

Ah that's so cute, trying to prove your office furniture is as good as a tool cabinet.

So that's 50kg on each of the bottom 2 shelves in a cupboard how tall? You can oly use the bottom ones due to tipping over ie it's unstable.

Lack of storage density. Average tool cabinet is smaller and holds considerably more. Thumbs Up

It's also unlikely you'll be using hanging file shelves to hold tools.

3/10 please try harder next time. Thumbs Down

I'm simply trying to suggest it will do the job and not cost ££££. I think you misread the label it's saying the drawers are all capable of holding 50kg but don't open more than one at once.

Obviously it's not as good as a 'proper' one, but it's free, I will not utilize a full set up I don't have that many tools, as I've said all my gear is in one cheap cab that has been faultless for years.

FFS pup, let him be. No-one has said that office cupboards are as good as dedicated roller cabinets, but they're also not an investment of several thousand pounds.

There is a reason I don't know if it is a good one. The builder massively over speced it. Laughing

There is a little unit on top of the pier. It's a Yamaha unit and is very loud despite it's size.

I like those Axle stands, there were cheap AF 20 something quid 3 tonne each and have been wicked.

I'd be rigging up a hoist system using that RSJ for lifting front/back end of bikes, engines out and other heavy shit if it were mine.

Fucking result.

No argument.

The RSJ is well Porno Movie.

My only critique is the potential Dropped Object In the Room. Namely the King Dick Double Ender on the RSJ.
It won't shake off but if inadvertently knocked off it could ruin an expensive paint job or at least put a tear in your nylons.

Thumbs Up

And you can tell the truth now. You built the garage to suit the dimensions of that trolley jack didn't you? Very Happy

The KD is very sturdy there is literally no way for it to fall off. I did however drop a torch off of it onto my Four Evil or Very Mad

I didn't mention the floor, it is a Ecotile floor. It's pretty good, very hard wearing and non slip. I just hoover it every now and then. It took me about a day to lay it single handedly. The instructions say to leave a 5mm expansion gap as it expands in the heat. I did however it was made redundant by all the heavy units round the sides. Laughing It lifts a bit in direct heat.
