I went to start my bike earlier and it would run for a second or 2 then just die... turns out the fuel pump needs replaced (or repaired).

Turns out it's the same one that's on the VFR, just with a different plug.

I had a look on ebay and found these ones:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Fuel-Pump-For-Kawasaki-ZX900-Ninja-ZX-9R-ZX9R-C-E-F-B1-B2-B3-B4/223019996953?hash=item33ed071719:g:~qcAAOSwxLVbJImn

The only difference is the plug and a fitting for a pipe on the plastic housing (anyone know what that's for?)

Anyone used these? As the proper ones for the zx9r are around £75-£85... just because the plug is different

If the plug is different then cut the plug off your Honda part and cut the plug off the replacement part and solder on the old Honda plug.

I've replaced numerous Honda Reg/Recs by chopping the connector on Kawasaki ones and soldering on the Honda connector. It worked for the life of the bike.

After going through many many electric fuel pumps on my Africa Twins and a short period with a Mikuni vacuum pump, I finally ended up with a Facet aftermarket pump. I think they use them on microlights/cars. Never had a problem with a fuel pump after that.

The cube pumps are quite cheap and I also have had good experiences with them.

OK, not bikes but I have had huge issues with Chinese crap fuel pumps on boats. I now only fit Facet pumps but I'm sure there are other good ones around.

I just grafted the Honda plug from one of my defunct pumps on to the wires of the Facet and zip tied the pump to the frame.

The ones on ebay allegedly have a 2 year warranty.... so if it breaks in that time I'll have it replaced, after the 2 years I'll buy another one.... I can get 4 new pumps and still not have spent the same as they want for an official one (and the bike is 17 years old anyway)

Also I thought I had mentioned that the pump was the same as the one on my VFR, just with a different plug.... it's the ninja that this pump is going on... just to clear that up

Yes, they're shit.
3 weeks, it was totally noisy clicking and high current draw.
They replaced it and same again.

You get what you pay for usually, I sourced the real deal Honda one cheap from Israel for about 37 quid delivered and that's been in about 2yr now.

The fuel pump arrived yesterday and just fitted it about an hour ago, and the bike still ran like shit and cut out after a second or so.... although the fuel filter is full now.

So I took the tank off again, had a look for the ignition coils to make sure everything was secured (because I didn't want to take the air filter off), couldn't find them*... I could just squeeze my hand under the air filter to check the spark plug caps were secure.... found cap 2 & 3 were about 1cm higher than 1 & 4 Embarassed

All caps secured and bike is running fine again.... strange that it was running fine 1 day then developed this fault the next Thinking

* Only after taking the bike a short run and putting it back in the lock up did I remember the coil is part of the spark plug caps Embarassed

My cheap one lasted 3500 miles, when it broke it was a nightmare, I couldn't work out what was wrong. I thought it was just the heat, possibly the spark plug rating being wrong as the caps were sparking, fuel came out the pump yet the bike kept stuttering and dying however it worked for a while once cooled down but gradually got worse.

The fuel pump was very hot when I finally removed it.

I've ordered another cheap one anyway for £12.50

I'll get a proper one next time, I thought the cheap one I had was bad as it clicked loudly from the start. I managed to get a partial refund on it so didn't cost that much in the end.
