I bought a thin, machine-washable, merino wool, long-sleeved T-shirt from Aldi last year - might have been marketed as a golfing shirt IIRC?

Anyway, it's my go-to garment for wearing in the height of summer under a vented mesh jacket; it's brilliant, doesn't get soaked in sweat or stink like pretty much everything else. I'm trying to find another similarish one though, and am struggling - can anyone recommend one online for my purpose? (Nothing at Aldi now, natch...)

A lot of merino gear seems to be sold more for winter riding than summer, ie its designed to keep you warm not cool, and without seeing it in the flesh it's kind of hard to know what you're buying.

Well those look like a pretty good price for merino, but that said, looking at the customer reviews it kind of makes my point - almost all the punters are saying how warm and toasty they are on cold winter nights.

Is the idea just to use the same garment in hot and cold weather, just layered? Thinking

My long sleeve icebreaker is a great base layer in winter or summer.

As above, Icebreaker are good. They are also expensive.

Aldi and lidl are now my goto ones. They often do them as part of their cycling offers.

Whatever you buy, check what they are actually made of. There's a lot of stuff out there labelled "merino" which are actually a merino/polyester blend. These do stink when sweaty. Got for the 100% merino.

It's all I wear under my leathers when it's hot. Wicks beautifully, dries quickly, will hold up to 30% liquid by weight without feeling wet. Does not stink, even if you wear it daily for a week.

I'd take the pepsi challenge with any synthetic base layer.

I prefer an Egyptian cotton body sock under mine. Not really but I am prepared to be educated. Why, it sounds so counter intuitive, the op says in his post that merino is usually for winter. I am mafting in just a cotton T shirt under a jacket in this weather, would a Merino wool shirt make it cooler?

Cotton holds sweat so you get clammy. Merino wool wicks and breathes much better. It also has natural antibacterial properties so you don't get (so) stinky.

So under a textile jacket with armour ETC (I cant wear a mesh vest cos I'm a 62 yo with a beer belly and it dont look cool), how does the Merino wool get rid of the sweat compared to a cotton T shirt and make you feel cooler. I get that it wicks sweat but so does cotton. It sounds like my granny wearing her her cardy on the beach in the middle of summer.

Cotton is the absolute worst fabric you could wear if you run the risk of getting wet (and face it, we are in the UK, it even rained a little bit near me today). If it gets wet it doesn't dry out easily.

In hot summer days, that just leads to you having a soggy t-shirt on. However if it rains, you remain cold and wet. Cotton is regarded as a killer fabric among the winter/water sports fraternity, wearing damp cotton is a good way to become hypothermic.

Wool wicks, so when you're hot it will carry the sweat away from your skin but it also dries quickly so the sweat will evaporate from it and keep you cool. It retains excellent insulating properties when wet so if you get it damp, it doesn't get cold and damp.

I don't know if you've ever handled a merino t-shirt OGR? At first look/feel it's like a very soft, thin cotton t-shirt.

I was wearing one today under my leathers.

I haven't ever had a Merino under shirt, but based on what you say I think I might try one. Saw some in Aldi a while back, I'll keep my eyes open and maybe try one, thanks!

I've been using Merino for years - seems wrong, but it really does keep you cool when it's hot and warm when it's cool.

OP: try Alpkit for reasonable price vs decent quality

Merino does work well and I have a few merino tops, however I have to admit I rather like my synthetic Helly Hanson Lifa
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Helly-Hansen-Mens-Stripe-Layer/dp/B001CS8A6A

A lot of the reviews talk about it being warm, but it works equally well under my summer leathers. Doesn't seem to get stinky, and it is easier to wash - no need for woolite and delicate wash cycle - just chuck it in with whatever else is going in the machine.

The merino tops I have were Howies ones that I bought in their sale years ago before they became a totally fashion centric rip off brand. I don't think they even do base layers anymore.

If you're thinking "wool = scratchy chunky cable-knit Christmas jumpers" then a brain reset is required. I have some merino base layers that are thinner than cotton and which wick better than CoolMaxtm techno-fabric.

Got mine from Sports Direct, 100% merino wool, about £20 each (t-shirt and leggings)

Guess this must be the equivalent (mine is all black)

Now I'm at a keyboard .... I've been commuting in the heat in this stuff under leathers or goretex and it's great. Way better than cotton or normal clothes. It dries quickly once you get changed and can be rinsed in cold water at work and drybto wear going home. Warm in the cool mornings and stops your gear drowning in sweat going home in 30+ degrees.

Thanks a lot Riejufixing - just had two of these delivered; they are the same thickness as my Aldi one, look good quality and will be just the job for hot summer wear.
