Well those look like a pretty good price for merino, but that said, looking at the customer reviews it kind of makes my point - almost all the punters are saying how warm and toasty they are on cold winter nights.
Is the idea just to use the same garment in hot and cold weather, just layered? ____________________ KC100->CB100N->CB250RS--------->DL650AL2->R1200RS->R1250RS |

As above, Icebreaker are good. They are also expensive.
Aldi and lidl are now my goto ones. They often do them as part of their cycling offers.
Whatever you buy, check what they are actually made of. There's a lot of stuff out there labelled "merino" which are actually a merino/polyester blend. These do stink when sweaty. Got for the 100% merino. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Cotton is the absolute worst fabric you could wear if you run the risk of getting wet (and face it, we are in the UK, it even rained a little bit near me today). If it gets wet it doesn't dry out easily.
In hot summer days, that just leads to you having a soggy t-shirt on. However if it rains, you remain cold and wet. Cotton is regarded as a killer fabric among the winter/water sports fraternity, wearing damp cotton is a good way to become hypothermic.
Wool wicks, so when you're hot it will carry the sweat away from your skin but it also dries quickly so the sweat will evaporate from it and keep you cool. It retains excellent insulating properties when wet so if you get it damp, it doesn't get cold and damp.
I don't know if you've ever handled a merino t-shirt OGR? At first look/feel it's like a very soft, thin cotton t-shirt.
I was wearing one today under my leathers. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

I've been using Merino for years - seems wrong, but it really does keep you cool when it's hot and warm when it's cool.
OP: try Alpkit for reasonable price vs decent quality ____________________ Honda Varadero 125cc => Suzuki Bandit 650 33bhp => 77bhp =>

Merino does work well and I have a few merino tops, however I have to admit I rather like my synthetic Helly Hanson Lifa
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Helly-Hansen-Mens-Stripe-Layer/dp/B001CS8A6A
A lot of the reviews talk about it being warm, but it works equally well under my summer leathers. Doesn't seem to get stinky, and it is easier to wash - no need for woolite and delicate wash cycle - just chuck it in with whatever else is going in the machine.
The merino tops I have were Howies ones that I bought in their sale years ago before they became a totally fashion centric rip off brand. I don't think they even do base layers anymore. |

If you're thinking "wool = scratchy chunky cable-knit Christmas jumpers" then a brain reset is required. I have some merino base layers that are thinner than cotton and which wick better than CoolMaxtm techno-fabric. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
