Morning all!

Tried to start the bike this morning and it wouldn't catch.

Bike would turn over, but that's it. Bike is a Yamaha TDM 900 '08.

I noticed that the LED screen would dim/go blank when hitting the starter and the FI pump didn't whirr into life when turning the ignition on.

This all suggest flat betters so tried to jump it from the car... Still no joy.

With/without jump leads attached the voltage across the battery terminals was 12.3v. Surely enough to get the bike going!

With the jump leads attached and the car running, still only 12.3v.

Is it possible the battery isn't taking a charge?

The last time this happened I managed to bump the bike and when the engine running at 4,000 rpm the reading across the batter was 14.4v so I don't think it's a reg/rec issue (unless it's intermittent).

So, first step, charge the battery & check all fuses.
Second step, replace battery.

What else should I be checking before passing it back to the dealer?

In warm weather a good modern battery should read 12.8v and 12.6v in cold the morning after, also check the battery connections to the bike.

I tend to do + to + and - on car to footpeg of bike.

I'd say 12.3 is too low for sure.

I also wouldn't run the car... but thats just me.

The fact it didn't fire up (assuming the car battery is good) means you didn't connect it properly as 12v is 12v and it would deem that as a battery attached to the bike, it doesn't know its 2 metres away and 10x the size.

I suspect you're right. I did try to re-seat the + terminal on the bike battery, no sparks were spotted which is unusual.

I'll know more tonight.

I had an issue with my battery where it would die while I was riding it!
I had to get the coil re-wound which solved the problem.

I ride with a spare battery and homemade jump leads now just incase.

Well bollocks!

The battery was fully charged last night. Dropped in to the bike this morning hoping all would be well. It was not.

Battery holding about 13v.

From a very brief look and listen.

Turn on ignition
Relay for fuel circuit clicks
Fuel pump doesn't run (high pitch whine for a few seconds normally)
Hit starter button
Starter relay clicks
Bike cranks but doesn't start (obviously)

The fuse for the fulfilling system is OK as again, the relay clicks on/off when insert/remove the fuse.

When I'm home this evening I'll pop the faring off to take a look at the relay and wiring. Make sure there's not damage there. If not, it's back to the dealer. Only PITA is it's 75 miles away via the god awful M25 and M3!

Brick Wall Brick Wall Brick Wall

Not hearing the pump prime is sounding some alarm bells.

Is sounding like fuel pump is a no no.

Can you provide power to just the fuel pump. I have a plug on mine which goes in to the loom on a connector, you can just feed it power and it'll make noises.

I'll have a go tonight and see what I can do.

Interestingly, I did read somewhere that too many keys on the bunch can cause issues. I must admint on the Tenere and MT-03 I used to just have the ignition key on its own, so I'll give that a shot too...

Factory Yamaha Y.I.S.S, though it did have a Datatool S3(?) Green, which was removed by the previous owner and it sat on my desk.

TLDRA

Battery Ground/Earth connection to frame is loose/dirty.
Easy to miss.

I'd go with this too, to test attach a jump lead to negative terminal and a bright part of frame. If things seem more normal it's a big clue even if it still won't turn over.

Well it's back up and running.

Took all the panels off and began checking every connector I could see. Had my hand under the tank when I suddenly heard the FI pump whirr into life.

A bit more faffing found what I assume is the FI system relay. Loads of wires going into it (definitely not the ECU). Disconnected, given a bit of a clean and re-seated.

Voila!

Not just to address all the other niggles!!

Thanks all.

inb4 stranded. Wink

Glad you found it, but I'd be a bit cautious with no long distances in the near future.

Ever the optimist! Wink

Yes, I am going to be incredibly paranoid for the next couple of weeks.

I'm planning to give the whole bike a good clean this weekend, try to get everything squeaky clean and properly lubed! Oh, not to mention replacing the 20a fuses with 10a as they should be!
