Hello all,

Coming to the end of a rebuild on my Pan after I dropped it down the road. During the rebuild I found that the water pump bearing was gone so I changed the pump and timing belt. Bike starts and runs lovely now.

However, something weird is happening to the oil. Fresh oil in and within seconds of running the oil turns and off-white colour. I thought I had some dodgy oil so changed it and the filter and it did exactly the same again.

I've got no cream under the filler cap and no back-pressure in the water system, temperature is normal and its not losing any water at all so I've eliminated any head gasket problems. I've left the bike ticking over for 1/2 hr without any issues.

Has anyone come across anything like this before ?

Thanks

Stu

If it changed colour immediately, then perhaps there was some previously-contaminated oil or "mayonnaise" still in the system which got mixed in. It's odd that it did this twice with an oil & filter change each time.

Is it ticking over on the "milky" oil? What happens if the oil is left to stand for a couple of hours? Not sure whether merely ticking over is a good test...

When I managed to do this

it required several oil changes before new oil didn't turn manky.

So keep changing the oil until the problem goes away. Mr. Green

A mates bike went in to a river and we flooded/flushed the engine with a gallon of deisel or so.
this helped get the remaining water out of internal nooks and crannies

Fill it with cheap engine oil and run on that. If not shitty immediately, run for a few miles and re-check. If still good run a few days then drain and refill with they quality of your choosing.

If it goes shitty immediately consider a new filter too. Or remove and drain the one that's on it.

Or worst case it's the head gasket. Confused

It is likely water residue in the system.
Cheap 'flushing' oil is available, and you are recommended NOT to ride on the stuff, just let the engine idle and warm and pump it through before drain.
Cheap is relative though... essentially its a low grade oil without so many addatives chucked in, except some extra deturgent.... washing up liquid....
Cheap engine oil, thinned a bit with deseasil and with some washing up liquid added, would probably do the same thing, and cost less....
I'd not be inclined to RUN an engine with neat deseasil in the sump... its very thin compared to oil!

Washing up liquid is an emulsifier... usually go get oil to mix with water when you do the dishes... but works t'other ways about too, getting water to mix with oil when you run engine.

I'd be tempted to pop a bit in the radiator too to flush crap and any oil contamination there, too.... then do a fluid flush and change.

But post flush, keep an eye on it; there may be or have been a weeping seal behind water pump or similar letting the two fluids mix; (And potential remains that a replacement pump could do the same, because of crap after-market pattern-part quality and or mechanic assembly error) or could just be accumulation of condensation in an engine not really run hard enough and long enough to ever boil it off.... BUT... we don't really know,, so keep an eye on it.

5L of "Gulftec plus 10W-40 semi synthetic" is £12.99 at Eurocarparts (discount code on ECP home page). I'm sure some even cheaper oil is available.
