A friend of mine is looking to import a turbo in the next year or so... due to the fact its $1000 compared to the £1700 equivalent over here...

are there ways to stop him getting bummed for the £200+ VAT ...

one person said he gets people to declare stuff as warranty replacements...

or is he just gonna have to suck it up and pay the money?

A friend send me a Cristmas from America a couple of years ago, I got a letter saying it was at the collection office and I had to pay around £60-70 for import tax because it was valued at around $200.... just get them to write the value as under £120

If it gets lost insurance will only pay out declared value...it’s a risk.

I always ask the seller to put 'warranty replacement part/s' on the package.

I've never been charged import duty.

£1700 for a turbo? Sounds like it's gonna be quite some bad ass turbo at that price!

I'm sure that years ago my mate had a turbo kit for his car sent to him from the USA in a large suitcase. Not sure if he had to pay any taxes on it, but I don't remember him mentioning it.

$1000 + £200 is cheaper than £1700. Alternatively if he's got a friend.. Wink

See if it will fit up his bottom on a flight?

It's mainly VAT you get stung for at 20% from non EU
US prices are not always as cheap as they seem as typically they have to pay sales tax too but it varies by state.
Usually still cheaper than here, but in most cases shipping then taxes on top you won't save much or everyone would do it.
Plus it can be a hassle with customs delays.

thanks for the info...

think he's gonna risk it with the warranty notice. 500bhp rated turbo for under £1k. bargain.

Either that or stop all this 500bhp business. 500bhp small cars was an across the pond phenomenon until say 5-6years ago, and now all the UK small roads, congestion strangled people want many hundreds of bhp too, and there's even some that think it's cool in FWD too? Confused

1. it's not a small car (stock 297 bhp)
2. it's a track car
