Hello everyone out there in this world wide web,

I'm a german student and currently writing my researh paper about "apps and data security". To make it a little bit more interesting (and to narrow it down) I specialized in navigation-/ tracking apps for motorbikes - and here is why I need your help because you are the ones that know things about this.

I did the questionnaire. Here's what you'd gain from my response:

I don't want to give unnecessary permissions or personal data for an app that does navigation. Just the bare minimum, such as my location and an email address if it insists I must log in.

But then I would ask, why would the app need me to log in at all? Is the app sending my location data to an external source? what are they doing with this data? Why not just use Google maps?

A navigation app just needs your location and possibly some saved postcodes for home, work, or favourite places.

None of that needs a login, just a really basic save file kept in the folder that the OS specifically has set aside for when apps want to save data.

Unless written by a moron or a person with an ulterior motive, navigation apps shouldn't have any data security risks at all. The only risk is in the part where passwords are entered, if for some reason logins are required (but why???).

If you want to write about data security, surely it's better to look at banking, finance or social networking/chat apps.
