Hello everyone,
Been a while since I posted, unfortunately I got a problem with the electric start. It makes a clicking sound but doesn't turn the engine (all other electrics working, and kick start works as well). I tested the battery which read 12.6V, which on my tester is supposed to mean it's got enough charge. Once I start it with the kickstart, it seems to work normally. Also I had noticed that at least last few times, the electric start did work on the day after I'd used the kickstart and ridden the bike (my trip: 14 miles each way commuting) which made me suspect the battery but it seems ok. What could be wrong here? Thanks for your advice again.

I reckon its your relay ticking not the starter motor.
Assuming a good battery and the lights don't dim when you press the
button,
I'd start by checking the battery connections are clean and tight
not forgetting battery/frame grounding
plus the check relay and starter lead connections

If you bridge the heavy duty terminals with say a screwdriver blade
or jump leads and the motor doesn't spin over, then it might be the starter/brushes.

My lad had a Pulsar and while I was the one fixed it up, details are dim

Thanks very helpful, I meant to say I hear a ticking sound when I press the start (I'm guessing as you say that's the relay not the motor). Getting a bit late now but I will try soon as I can.

I didn't see any obvious bad connections, so decided to top up the battery (despite reading 12.3V on my tester which is supposed to be enough)--and that did the trick. I don't know when the battery was last replaced but I will prepare to do it soon.
By the way I'm riding a YBR125 now, keep forgetting to change signature...

Most likely problem is the starter motor brushes. First use an old screwdriver to bridge the two big terminals on the starter relay. Does it crank now? If not, connect a test lamp between the large terminal on the starter motor, and the starter motor casing. If this lights when start button is pressed, power is getting to the starter motor. If this if the case, starter needs new brushes. Videos on youtube will show you how.
