2nd year in succession in the spill counter. Must try harder!

25th of June, Filtering past queuing traffic at a very sensible 'just in case' 30mph when a van pulls a U turn straight in front of me.

Damage to the bike - Bent forks, smashed nose and fairing, damaged engine casing. Basically, a dead VFR

Damage to me - A black and blue ball sack Sick

No issue with insurance, they accepted full liability within 30 minutes Thumbs Up

Just waiting on the cash offer for the now written off bike Rolling Eyes

Paint diagram attached.

Bump. Car driver took offence to the F800 this morning and rammed into me head on. :c Swerved into my path directly in front of me and shunted head first into my bike at about 30mph, while I was doing 30mph the other way. I wasn't filtering, not speeding, he just reckons he didn't see me. Then immediately accused me of speeding until all three of the witnesses leapt to my defence. Police turned up and took statements, told me the driver will be reported for careless/inconsiderate driving.

F800GS is dead, i've broken two fingers and scraped both knees. helmet is scratched, trousers ripped, jacket surprisingly ok (thanks leathers!). My insurance company arranged a recovery vehicle to bring the bike back to my garage where it's been sitting.

Huge thanks to Tierbirdy for giving me a lift home and back to get the bike secured.

Now onto the juicy shit:

Question now is (and I might make a seperate thread on this once i'm settled) how to proceed with insurance. I've tried to report the incident to my insurers but their system has been down all day so each time i've called them they've said they can't log the incident or start a claim against the driver rolling. I have the other vehicle's insurance details but i've no idea what i'm supposed to do from here...?

Oh and the black and blue balls thing is no lie, I actually think I might be a girl now. Embarassed

Ouch! The balls will get better. Eventually!

Contact his insurance company directly to make the claim. It's the quickest, easiest way to things sorted.

You're going to want to lawyer up for broken bones though. Compo is due.

Just report the incident to your insurers when you can.

Everyone on BCF's been riding very carefully this year it seems - here's my contribution to this thread: what's this, about Spill #5 so far for 2018?

So. At the weekend I was riding my BMW R1200RS through some mountains in south-east France. No traffic, great roads, dry, perfect visibility - looked pretty much as it did in the StreetView screenshot below, actually. I'd been through lots of quite fast sweeping curves, having a ball; but my last bend tightened up dramatically and somehow I just didn't spot it till too late. it was so not a sweeping curve. Looks like I so nearly made it round - see the appalling Paint diagram below (remember it's France, so driving on the right) but I went off the edge of the tarmac at the red star - there were marks at the edge of the road next to the farthest road marker pole. Clearly, the cause was 100% poor obs. Muppet.

Last thing I remember was that grassy bank coming towards towards me at high speed. Next, I find myself lying on the road in the recovery position and there's people all round me saying stuff like "wiggle your fingers for me". Someone said the bike had high-sided, apparently I was well airborne anyway, and landed on my face; I think the lights were probably out for 3 or 4 minutes. I was wearing a Helite airbag vest, which triggered on impact, so my neck and spine were locked in a straight position. I was blue-lighted off to Le A&E, and the paramedics reckoned that without the vest the outcome would have been a hell of a lot worse. My only injury is a broken collar bone, so I'm bloody lucky.

I never got to see the bike, but I was told it wasn't very pretty (nobody took any pictures). All being well it's being repatriated by my breakdown company in due course, but I expect it will get written off.

So, an open-face helmet next time, maybe? Shocked

That was your first mistake. I work in Bradford and there’s so many roundabouts that every car just apexes, my bum gives it the 50p/5p action every time.
I don’t even use the horn now, I just plan escape routes as best I can and so far I’ve survived. Nothing you can do about a sudden u-turn though.

I went around the ring road of Bradford on my old commute route. My experience was to be the fastest thing on the road. Ride fast because nobody does the speed limit - get away from them.

That’s a good strategy and one that I use most days. There’s more near misses when a rare police car wanders down the road and everybody suddenly halves their speed to pretend they’re law abiding citizens.

I do the ring road to get on the M606 on the way home and everybody else wants to go that way, but nobody else admits it until 50 yards before the roundabout, where three lanes of traffic suddenly all shunt into the left lane.

That's my route from where I live to the M62 to go back towards Manchester way to see the family. I hate that road. It even slows to a 30 (or the signs change from 40 to 30) to be ignored by everyone and then have people stop in lane 2 while they try and get into 1.

Every time I drive through, I say to my missus, "I fucking hate this place, shithole".
