Hi all,

I have a few issues with my 99 hornet. Its been playing silly buggers for the last 6 months and weekend after weekend iv'e tried a range of things and i just cant seem to get it to work. Below are the things i've changed and the things i'm experiencing. Any help would be great as i think i'm close to just setting alight to it.

Issues

- Not running properly (Very rough) Have to hold throttle on half way to get it it turn over sometimes
- When it is running rough all cylinders are hot (squirty water test)
- Sometimes wont start at all probably due to flooding from attempting to get it running.
- Getting spark on all four and fuel must be getting in as its coming out of the exhaust which to me shown its getting through still?
-

Things i've done so far

- stripped and cleaned carbs ultrasonically and manually twice
- when it was running okay ish - balanced them
- changed HT leads and Ignition coils for some ebay ones 2d hand
- changed spark plugs from iridium back to standard and gapped to 0.8
- compression tested all four cylinders which all seem okay
- changed fuel lines
- checked airbox is on and seated correctly as well as carb boots and engine boots

Things i'm unsure of?

- what are the symptoms of a CDI unit failure?
- my battery is two years old and seems fine so doubt it could be this charges up fine and turns the bike over well until I've exhausted it

cheers everyone.

Might be rich on one, lean on another, if you can't be arsed taking the carbs out again you can assess the fuel level in each bowl with clear tubing, attached to where the drain screw goes.

E.g.
https://www.motorbikerestoration.co.uk/maintenance/carburetor-float-level/

I think it's got a lift pump, you could disconnect the power or turn off the fuel tap and that will starve it off fuel. If it runs OK shortly after that for a short while that would also indicate rich fueling prob.

Don't discount air leaks, does the choke make any difference?
Did you mess with any mixture screws when rebuilding?
Were all pilot holes blown clear?
Fuel lines renewed, but are they pinching when the tank goes back down?
Fuel tank breather OK?
Fuel filter OK?

If it's got a TPS (think it has) then checking the resistance with a multimeter is worth a shot.

Hi All,

Thanks for the suggestions. A little update...

i decided to strip the carbs back down and the pilot jets had fallen out. i read the manual wrong and backed them off rather than the mixture screws and i did wonder why they seemed very loose when re assembling! new plugs (back to standard and not iridium shite) and firing back up like a beauty! the carb clean and plug change must have sorted the issue and the jets must have slowly vibrated out causing the gradual messing around in each cylinder!!

School boy error but certainly one i can learn from!

Thanks again all.
