You have more faith in the region and its people than I do.

Not really. I have faith a dictator like Saddam would do what's necessary to keep the scumbags in line.

There wouldn't have been any of this ongoing shit if Saddam, Assad and Gadaffi were still in power. (I know Assad is nominally, but was totally undermined)

Maybe in their own countries. But such dictators seem to have a tendency to get more ambitious when everything at home is under control.
It's all very well to say we shouldn't have got involved, and perhaps that's better, but that doesn't mean everything would be quiet and smell of roses. Saddam's invasion of Kuwait was an example.

Oh agreed, but then as far as I am concerned he could have Kuwait. There would have been a stand off between him and the Saudis if we/yanks hadn't got involved.

Saudi's the same, just a family dictatorship anyway.

It would still have been better FOR US than the shit situation that is in place now.

For us...we could ignore Syria and let the Russians deal with it. Well, we pretty much are. We could stop all the refugees from Libya and Syria flooding into Europe...well, we needn't worry about that so much now either, assuming (and it's a big assumption, admittedly) that a proper...you know, B-word happens Whistle

For us...Kuwait is a relatively moderate ally in the region. Abandon them? Thinking

Same with Saudi really. Plenty of stuff we don't like about such countries, but what happens if we disengage entirely? Does it get better or worse? Forgetting our strategic interests, i.e. oil, in the region for a moment of course.

Shit. No, don't answer any of that. The forum is dying remember, and this ain't politics and current affairs Laughing

Actually, dead and dying celebs maybe should be in that section...?

Actually he told the Americans he was going to take Kuwait and they told him not to worry as what he wants to do in Kuwait is none of the US's business. Shocked

I just assumed all Icelandics were weird, just think Bjork and you'll never look at an Icelander again without wondering what kind of weirdo is hiding under their coat.
